Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan; Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Chairman of SPLM/A-IO, the SPLM Leaders (FDs) and other Stakeholders including the Adherents for signing the Agreement for Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic South Sudan.

We congratulate the people of South Sudan – who painfully suffered during the last twenty months – for the patience and resilience in enduring their predicament. With the signing of the Agreement, a new era of peace and prosperity has been ushered in for you and your beloved country. Because of the Agreement, the barrel of the gun shall be silent.

We congratulate the IGAD leaders for their tireless efforts, wisdom and patience, and most of all, for their unity of purpose that brought this day of peace and heralded a bright future for the people of South Sudan. We also congratulatethe people of the IGAD region, as peace is indivisible amongst our communities.

At this important juncture, we call up on the warring parties to strictly implement the Permanent Ceasefire within 72 hours of the signing of the Agreement, as provided for in Chapter II, Art. 1. of the Agreement.

We recognize that the signing of this Agreement is the end of the protracted phase of negotiations and the beginning of the implementation phase. What is important now is therefore to focus on the full and complete implementation of the Agreement. We are confident that, if this Agreement is implemented with sustained political will, courage, integrity and diligence, it will bring lasting peace and prosperity for the people of South Sudan.

Last, but not least, we would like to fully recognize and deeply appreciate the unreserved support, commitment and unity of purpose demonstrated by all members of the IGAD-PLUS.
