Biemnom Intellectuals refute Mayom Intellectuals’ “[warning] of violence over creation of South Sudan’s new states” and the claim of Ruweng Biemnom land

November 20, 2015 (SSB)  —-  November 15, 2015 – Some Mayom Intellectuals “warned of violence over creation of South Sudan’s new states” and claimed Ruweng Biemnom land as a part of Mayom. Ruweng Biemnom Intellectuals are shocked by this uncivil and unintellectual statement released by Mayom Intellectuals who are evidently detrimental to the inextricable ties between Biemnom and Mayom.

Intellectuals should be advocates of peaceful coexistent between communities. Biemnom Intellectuals reaffirm that Biemnom has a border with Panrieng as the map of Sudan history proves it. Mayom Intellectuals argue that, Ruweng Biemnom have no border with Panrieng,” and that “Ruweng/Alor Dinka were displaced from Panrieng suburbs in 1930.”

This statement lacks evidence and it is intended to plant seeds of land feud between the great peoples of Biemnom and Mayom. Intellectuals should be proponents of peace and development and role models for the young generation. In his book, “The Historical Analysis of Boundaries,” Douglas Johnson stated that Ruweng Biemnom exists in the present Ruweng land; it is our native land before the British colonial rule in Sudan and before Bul Nuer moved from Jegay to current Ruweng Biemnom land of Mayom.

Societies around the world have historical background. In 1900s, Bul Nuer originally migrated from Jegay which is located in the present South East of Unity State. Biemnom Intellectuals’ hypothesis is that, Bul Nuer were displaced from Jegay to our land of Mayom by clan war, famine, and natural disasters, such as floods and droughts. The name Mayom is a Dinka word to describe the colour of a Bull.

The current Northern Mayom area belongs to Ruweng Biemnom since 1460s -present. Before Bul Nuer migrated from Jegay to Mayom, our former neighbors were Luac Aguer Adel and Jur Man-Anger. The South of Mayom was inhabited by Luac Aguer Adel currently present in Tonj North and Jur-Man-Anger resided in South West of Mayom currently part of Apuok County in Gogrial. We do not intend to speak for other communities but history has to be told.

Your threat of violence quoted below is well taken by Ruweng but you own its consequences should you attempted to do so: “Remember that the land belongs to the people of Mayom. Now the choice is in your hands, either to evacuate the land and go back to Parieng peacefully or remain peaceful with us.” Puok.

Your continuous threat of violence to your neighbors is tremendously damaging Mayom’s reputation and may lead you to unforgettable outcomes in the future. There is no doubt that the aim of some Bul Intellectuals is to erode good relations between Nuer Bul and Dinka Ruweng of Biemnom.

Ruweng Biemnom Intellectuals consider the border between Mayom, Biemnom, Rubkona and Panrieng as administrative boundaries to widen services to our suffering communities but socially we are one people.

South Sudanese citizens deserved unity amongst themselves to build a strong South Sudan: we fought for this freedom and we should equally enjoy its peace dividend.

God Bless South Sudan
