IGAD Juba summit suspended indefinitely

Nov. 21, 2015 (SSB) – A regional summit for South Sudanese peace in Juba has been postponed indefinitely, the government announced on Friday.
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) head of states and governments meeting scheduled for Monday November 23 will not go ahead due to logistical and tight businesses, information minister Michael Makuei announced said on Friday.
Makuei cited tight schedules for Presidents of IGAD countries for the delay.
“The summit will be held anytime soon but the date is not fixed now,” he told reporters after Friday council of minister meeting.
The IGAD summit in Juba will inaugurate the office of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) – a body tasked with monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement and ceasefire.
The leader of SPLM IO, Riek Machar, is expected to attend.
IGAD countries of Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda and international partners including the U.S brokered the peace agreement that ended the 21 months of conflict in August.
The summit will mark the end to the role of mediators, move the implementation of the shaky deal to South Sudan and start the work of JMEC.
