Grocery worker struck and killed by semi-truck in Calgary parking lot

ALGARY – A man was killed early Thursday morning in an industrial accident in southeast Calgary.


Global Calgary 24-year-old Nhial Malual was working for Western Grocers in the 6800 block of 40th Street S.E. when he was struck by a semi-truck backing up outside the store.

He was pinned by the truck while on the pad of the loading dock. He died at the scene.

Malual was employed as a swamper and was responsible for unloading the trucks.

Traffic officers and the province’s Occupational Health and Safety unit are investigating.

Loblaw Companies, which own Wetern Grocers, issued the following statement late Thursday morning.

“Nhial has been part of our team for four years and we are incredibly saddened and shocked by this tragic accident. On behalf of Loblaw Companies, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all those who are affected by this tragedy. Nhial will be missed. We are providing grief counsellors to all our colleagues at this Calgary distribution centre. “
