The Association for Media Development in South Sudan, AMDISS, has
conducted an introductory lecture on Saturday 20th August, on the
activities, history and future plans of the association and was
attended by almost 20 journalists from various media houses across the
country.
The lecture was presented by Dr. Hakim Moi, the associations’
Executive Board of Directors Secretary. Dr. Hakim discussed issues
related to the legal environment for media and journalist in South
Sudan, the three Media Bills that are currently pending in the
parliament (the Right to Information Bill, South Sudan Broadcasting
Corporation Bill and Media Authority Bill).
The lecture also created dialogue between AMIDSS and other media
houses with the intention of sharing information on public interest
and interest of the media houses in addition to the legal context of
freedom of expression in South Sudan.
Among the recommendations agreed on during the lecture are; formation
of an independent media council, conducting more similar lectures,
journalists to have access to code of ethics and create plans and
strategies on the enforcement of the media bills.
AMDISS is currently establishing a resource centre that will provide a
gathering place for the local and international press and also
providing a hub for AMDISS’ activities. The resource Centre will be a
place for journalists to discuss debate and reflect. There will be
computers, wireless internet, a library with materials such as
newspapers, books, and research materials.
AMDISS is a media member based organisation headquartered at the Media
Development Institute in Juba, South Sudan. The membership includes
many of the country’s leading editors and journalists.
