Dr. John Gai Yoh, South Sudan Minister for Education, on his strategic views of South Sudan Education System

January 14, 2016 (SSB) — There is a saying that, “some people do passed through academic but academic never passed through them”!!! As it is well stated, you may be wondering why such a scenario happened to academicians who were been trusted with vast knowledge gained for more than sixteen years (16) of higher learning programs such as eight years (8) for primary education, four years (4) for secondary education, and another four years (4) for the university learning and after graduation, a person is regarded as an educated person and being assigned at any level to deliver services to societies, but recently it is discovered that learners and teachers data base contained 13 concepts which make it difficult for some people to reveals their proper results in education in term of delivery system.

Moreover, the above subject signifying the role of teaching to those who were qualified to teach, the reliable men and women who are entrusted to teach others either in primary, secondary, or in universities, and to develop a unify system of education in the Republic of South Sudan. May be we are not far away from the truth, the reality of passing through academic but academic itself never passed through some of us and that is why in fact we failed to make little progress in education in South Sudan as eleven years passed by zero percent.(0%) compared to well structured, technology, and modern education outside the country. We chasten education after like chasing the wind.

The introduction to the above concepts contains the materials to the learners and contents to the teachers, that are humans and the Holy Spirit as a maturity in Christ Jesus, so please you may not understand me but take it or read it this way because the writer is a Theologian, Psychologist, Educationist, Social Analyst, Social Worker, and more depending on his qualifications as he suggested the roles of 13 concepts in education in relation to South Sudan problems of the entire education is concerns.

Furthermore, let’s define education and its origins. Education is Ducere- the Latin word, meaning, “lead out”. Early in Middle Age, the origin of education began from the Church about 3500 B.C, and 150 – 200 years or more than 50 years in some countries, I don’t know how many years was reading and writing began in South Sudan? But what drives me to write this article are the three important English tenses of educational concepts contributing into positive impacts of human- social development as well as much inputs of education plans are needed in the present and future development of South Sudan side of education sector. These three concepts include;

  1. The past education– This is an education body of knowledge. Education can be the past – events body of knowledge, which can reline mind and personality with prudence of behaviors.
  2. The present education– education discovery of meanings, (new things) in the world. With present education, people discover new things daily because education is the path of new development.
  3. The future education– education empowering people to deal with difficulties and their future, and since there is no proper future education in South Sudan, there will be also no proper hypothesis of South Sudan education for 20-40 years to come and the future of the country. Why? Because educated society plan ahead for sustainable development where education becomes the priority that may lead other perimeters of social development.

As I mentioned before that learners and teachers matter lots worldwide, and all forms of social development comes as a result of learners and teachers by education’s products, let’s also define theses two words “learn and teacher” to bring 13 conceptions of educational system in our country in conjunction with learnt persons – human resources of the nation- find yourself.

  • “Learn”-L-E-A-R-N” consists of five points with its four sub-points. “L”– is the level of learning in three stages of; 1. Cognitive knowledge goes to head; 2. Co-affecting, attitudes, values, and emotions knowledge go to heart; 3. Psychomotor knowledge, skills, actions, and application or doing go to actions; 4. Inventing knowledge goes to investment. In African perspective, some people in the continent believe that inventive knowledge is lacking in Africa, they are still dreaming so, it is quiet different.

“E”- is extend of learning include six sub-points; 1- Awareness, 2- Comprehension; 3. Comparison; 4- Problem-solving; 5- Synthesis; and 6- Evaluation.

“A”- is the avenues of learning includes three families; 1-First family is the information processing such as identification of more things from known to unknown; 2. Inquiry. The inquiry is very important avenue of learning process. Some people think that if you reached university level, you are everything, but you cannot know everything, those who inquiry more knowledge from others prosper. 3. The second family of learning include; 1. Conditioning of learning such as consequences of learning or feedback, the results of your learning that may indicate kind of what you are learning and cue learning; 4. Social family learning includes; structured modeling, and spontaneous modeling.

“R” –is the Readiness for learning and include; motivation for positive and negative motivation for all interests.

“N”-Nature”- is the nature of learning that brings change, the experiences and interaction for change.

  • “Teacher”-T-E-A-C-H-E-R” consists of seven points such as follows:
  1. 1. “T”-Teacher- divine and human relationship with divine qualified.

2.”E”- Explicit curriculum

  1. “A”- Aim of teachings

4.”C”- Class and individual learners

  1. 5. “H”- Holistic environment
  2. “E”- Educational activities
  3. 7. “R”- Results of teachings.

In conclusion; Learning and teaching are changing agents through deliberate or incidental experiences under the supervision of experienced teacher in which one integrate age- appropriate knowledge, attitudes, values, emotion, and habits into an increasingly development lifestyle. All in all, right teachers who incorporate 13 concepts can develop education sector in South Sudan very fast and surprisingly.
