Happy new year 2016

January 19, 2016 (SSB)  —  Late but never forever, this is first of the series of articles for year 2016. Like last year I promise that this year will be no exception good health and other commitments allow. I will continue to write for the usual topics of economy, governance, health, education and religion.

The year 2016 is going to be an interesting and colourful year in terms of politics as ushered in by the creation of twenty eight (28) states. Nobody knew that the issue of 28 states was going to cause such headache as we now witness. Nobody either knew that the government was going to succumb to creation of more states before the start of the transitional period of the CPA 2015 – some people erroneously call it CPA number 2 (CPA 2).

However, nothing brings the two CPAs together though the 2015 CPA was modelled on the successful 2005 one to dupe the doubting Thomas’s who thought that peace among South Sudanese was not possible. The two big words that distinguish the two CPAs are “Comprehensive and Compromise” otherwise the other initials mean the same thing – Peace Agreement.

The 28 states creation seems to be cause to unravel the agreement but this is due to varying interests of the parties, simply put, who should have created it for political reasons is the question mark. There was already a question of who initiated self determination and therefore the separation of the then Southern Sudan from the union.

That said, the other things that will shape this country are the devaluation or realignment of the exchange rates, registration of political parties, falling oil prices, crop up of rebel groups, repatriation of IDPs at UNMISS camps. These are some of the things we are going to stare in the face in 2016. Others may be in the offing.

Take care as we welcome 2016.
