On the 2nd march 2016 H.E James Wani Igga the Vice President of the Republic of South addressed the East African Community (EAC) ordinary summit of heads of State.

H.E the Vice President describe the summit as historic event for south Sudan because it is in it that finally South Sudan is accepted as a full member of the East Africa Community. South Sudan membership in the EAC is not strictly about economics, politics, culture or ethnicity. It is more than that-it is about history itself-present and future.

In terms of development and welfare of our people, joining the EAC is about what future holds for our people and nation. Our forefathers aspired for it some fifty years ago. South Sudan’s admission to the East African Community marks a decisive shift in my countries foreign and economic policies said H.E the Vice President. It is only after the proclamation of independence, that South Sudan is free to make its own regional and foreign policies.

As part of this policies we have made a clear statement that we want to be a part of the EAC.

This is not surprising, as South Sudan is historically, economically and ethnically a part and parcel of greater East Africa Region.

This is why in less than four (4) months after independence we signed an application for EAC membership. Today we are witnessing the results of that application as we have just been admitted to the esteemed East African Community said the vice president H.E Wani Igga.

According to the speech of H.E the Vice President South Sudan’s membership in the East African Community shall have important benefits. As members of the community we will enhance our cooperation with the Region in many areas including: In governance, economic, political and defense areas. EAC membership will harmonize our legal system, customs and numerous standards with those of the community.

South Sudan’s membership in the EAC will not only bring tangible political, social and economic benefits to South Sudan but also to the Region as a whole. East African Community’s enlargement will invariably increase trade, investment and economic growth within the larger community.

It is worth mentioning that the Vice President has affirm the commitment of the government of the RSS to the implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.

During his address to the Summit the Vice President express the happiness of the government and people of the Republic of South Sudan because our Country has become member of the Region that has one of the fastest economic growth rates in the world.

H.E James Wani Igga, the vice president of the Republic of South Sudan express his sincere gratitude to the heads of state of the EAC and the people of EAC partner states for the fact that today south Sudan has become a part of the EAC.

Together we stand a better chance to create a globally competitive East Africa.
