  1. Introduction

In our Christian history, human philosophy is growing high and higher, Christian Life Teachings, a college of the Bible in America and Africa, which it’s based in United States of America, and also home in Bungoma, western Kenya had acreditially programed practical work and services in both secular and Church ministry with 12 credit hours and incorporated this work compulsory that any student must write family background, old believes, and new life Christ. Christian Life Teachings is accredited with the American Accrediting Association of Theological Institutions of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. They are affiliated with Shalom Bible College and Seminary, 4007 High Road, West Des Moines, IA 50265, U.S.A., and YAHshua Bible College and Seminary in Perryville, AR 72126.

Therefore, Students are requiring writing practical work and life services in the church and outside the church as remember in the community. Thesis based on family history or family background, old life and new life Jesus Christ, journey of the new life in God, steps in new life, work experiences, goal career, and reason to study in Christian life Teachings.

For the real academic purposes, I wrote Religion brief background and Dinka theology of the time and for in future to assist theologians by elevating more doctrinal truth of Dinka community believes. As followers of Jesus Christ, we mended back to mankind during the creation as he (man) was created to worshipped God, and therefore in line to Gospel according to John, we are commissioned by Christ to produce more fruits, (John 15:8), says, “When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified; And you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of mine.”

The thesis were part of Christian boasted in the Lord as our background commented role of the entire people how they worshipped idols, and also how they were converted to Christianity in a large number in 1980s comparing to the time of Machuor British Missionary to the Sudan as he proceeded to and settled in Malek in Guala Area along the River Nile in Bor, and spreaded the mission to other areas in Southern Sudan.

Although practical work was required for (12) twelve credits hours, we thank God who gives us this opportunity to acquire his great knowledge through the power of the Holy Spirit who sustain lives for his own glory. Be blessing as you read through the series and essences of these theological perspectives.

The following are testimonies, practical works and services of David Matiop which includes family history, old life, new life in Christ, personal work/experiences, reason to study in CLT, and career ministry goal. In brief background, Christianity in our community has two revivals, one revival in 1905 during the Archbolshore Gospel campaign, (Machuor), a British missionary to the Sudan who stationed in Malek in Bor and the second revival was in 1980s, when sons, and daughters of Bor community turned upside down Bor idols by converting the whole community to Christ Jesus, and burned idols, and their shrines with wonders and miracles.

  1. The family history.

The brief family background of David Matiop is from the two clans of whom the Father and Mother came from. David’s Mother Mary Akur Anyang was from sub-clan of Kool in Abodiit, and his Father Gai Kuerot Chagai was from sub-clan of Dhien de Deng Ajak of Alian community from the Boma of Akueideng, both were from Jallee payam in Bor County. Gai married Akur in 1965, and gave birth to three sons but died consecutively and the fourth son was named Matiop because of his dead brothers before him or Matiop mean named after the dead. In Bor County, Jallee Payam was the first payam ordained during the British colonial ruled to the level of payam in greater Bor community.

The paramount chief of Jallee Payam Beny Alier Kuany Ateng governed three clans of Aboudit, Juet, and Alian. The sub clan of Deng Ajak’s background came from western side of the River Nile. The grandfather of this community is believed to be a founder of Alian community, a man called Buor or Buontool who got Anoum in the area, but the name Alian was originated by action done to Buor when Pathieyeith clan tried to raid his cows in cattle camp called Wundit.

Later on, Anoum made a tactic that saved Buor’s life and his animals. He told Buor to tied down one bull in the cattle camp with strong local rope called (chuael) that may be assumed by Buor’s enemies as the whole cattle camp is still in place or cattle camp while he escaped the raided with animals. When the plan succeeded, Buor became very pleased and cut his body as kind of blessings, and he called Anoum to drink his blood as a covenant of peace between the two clans of Chaamangony and Pabeer.

The Africa traditions of worshipping by then related to ancestral gods and in these three clans of Jallee Payam, they used to worship many gods of their ancestors. In Juet, they worshipped Mangok or mangok de Juet, Aboudit worshipped Cheah Akuak, Awual de Pen, or Awien de Maluk Kon, and Alian worshipped Awieu, Ruar, and many others. The purposes of worshipping these gods were to providing rain, protection, health, and many other needs. The three clans were the most fearful and terrible idols worshippers in greater Bor community, until the Christianity came into the area. In the same manner, these communities were converted to Christianity in a biggest number.

Their confession turned the whole community of Bor County to the Christian faiths as well as headquarters of denominations are almost headed by sons/daughters of this payam. Today, Jallee Payam in Bor County has Episcopal Church of South Sudan/Sudan, (ECS), and Sudan Pentecostal Church, (SPC), and African Island Church, (AIC), Gospel Apostolic Church, (GAC), World Outreach Ministries foundation, (WOMF), South Sudan Anglican church, (SSAC), Reform Episcopal Church of Sudan, (RECS), Seventh Day Adventist, (SDA), Gospel Assembly of God, South Sudan Lutheran Church and many others. The presences of these churches in the areas have brought changes in many lives of Jallee Payam as well as the entire people of greater Bor community.

  1. The old life or life outside Jesus Christ!

The believes and worships in the past or in our community was regarded to God Almighty although people were worshiping idols. Here is the light of my grandfathers and grandmothers believed and worshiped to their gods in their time until first family members converted to Christianity in 1905 when the British missionaries reached our area.

In Dinka community particularly Dinka Bor, people worshipped idols but acknowledged (Nhialinyditrir, or Duciek). The Nhialinyditrir mean God Almighty to differentiate God from other nhialic, god or gods, while Duciek mean the creator, and if people say Duciek, they referred to the creator of the universe who is the great maker than other gods. In other word, Jieng (Dinka) in their local language thong Jieng do called God, Deng Abuk, the provider of rain, lives, health, the creator of the universe, and all mankind.

The old life or life outside Christ was characterized by fear, anxiety, stress, death and lack of hope which was caused by these many gods in our family as well as an extended family. Each household in our community has different gods with different demands. In my family, we were worshipping two gods, Wual and Benydeng. And under these two gods, our family suffered too much for their demand, worship, and rules. In an old life, we will discuss Wual and Benydeng demands, worship, and rules as follows:

  1. The demand of wual and Benydeng gods (nhialic).

In an infinitive natural wisdom, we all know that human beings are born and strive too many hazards of Suffering against human lives such as diseases, hunger, outbreak of air born diseases, natural disaster, man-made disaster, such as conflicts and wars, but all these problems are strings of death because the final suffering of human end at physical death, all know, all do passed through it, all are aware of it, People died and nobody came back, but gods of Wual and Bengdeng do deceived our family that if a member in the family got sick to the point of death or not, they urged elders that let the family slaughtered either animals or chickens to free the member from the sickness.

These two gods like blood or at least something they want must be done to them. Another demand is about Wual, a dangerous god who stricter the family on issues of work. In every morning and evening, when food is cooked, the first dish to be filled is for Wual, and this god doesn’t cares about children whether food is enough or not, it is not it concern provide that its food is available. The third demand was about social life, Wual doesn’t want family members to participate in social activities, such as any dance or rally related to other gods in the community. And if a member violate, he/she must pay something to compensate otherwise one can face consequences.

  1. The family worships of Wual and Benydeng gods.

The family of Kueirot Chagai worship Wual and Benydeng separately. The worshipping of Wual is connected and related to the affairs of the family. In this worship, bulls, goats and chickens are offered in April at the beginning of every year, during rainfall and cultivation. When people cultivate, and it is time for harvest, the first pure gains will be cut for Wual to please him and in order to bless another coming season. For Benydeng is normal, it is offering one bull once a year.

  1. The rules of Wual and Benydeng gods

The rules and regulations of these gods were too much, and terrible. The worshippers of these gods especially Wual have to do things with permission from him and move step by step, even eating was a problem. These were their rules:

  1. First fruit during harvest belong to him.
  2. No participation on social activities without permission from him.
  3. Sacrifice must be made in every April before new season/cultivation began.
  4. Bulls, goats, and chickens should be offer accordingly.
  5. Sickness and death can strike the family if members do not obey him.

In conclusion, old life under traditional gods was fearful, anxiety, death, and confusion. The nature of worship offered to these gods was a condition to safe lives of children as well as parents. It was a deceitful life, instead these animals and chickens were supposed to be used for treatment, food, and clothing, these gods deceived the family. The old life was bondage, suppression, and slavery of terrifying innocent people with looting of their properties in the names of wual may not kill people.

  1. The new life or life in Christ.

The definition, meaning and concept of new life, a new life in Christ Jesus is a blessing. Simply God created us for a wonderful purpose: that we might live forever with him in joy, love, perfect holiness, purity, righteousness and justice. But the problem is that humans do not know how to live in perfect love and justice. The most basic work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life is the new birth.  New life in Christ symbolized his action of love, joy, peace, perfect holiness and justice of God in us.

Let go back briefly through testimony of my new life in Christ Jesus. My conversion was a miracle though we always ignored goodness of God in ourselves the time it happens. We all know people believed and choose to follow Christ if someone witness to each other. This step doesn’t happen, but God in his uniqueness appeared to young David Gai in 1985, when David dreamt a dream seeing the Church members of his Community in the air, a message understood after eighteen (18) years later on by David when he joined the Bible college in 2003, as a rapture of holy saints in the air, (1 Thess 4: 17).

 I questioned how do these people reached into the air? Why are they not falling down? And why are they over joy? Immediately somebody with wing, and wearing white robe came to me and said, these are people who accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, a power of love of that name Yescu, (Jesus) came into my heart and I felt to accept Jesus as my Savior and Lord. The Man said to me, see youself and I saw myself in the midst of the crowd in the air. In the following morning I went to Church nearby, Episcopal Church of Sudan and later on I went to Sudan Pentecostal Church, (SPC). On the Christian growth, new life as a divine process through the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit, God the Holy Spirit do help Christians in number eight (8) or the following processes for Christian growth and development from spiritual childhood to adulthood in faith.

  1. The history or journey of new life.
    • The word of God; (Rom 10:8-9),

The word of faith, love, peace, and of eternal life begins by hearing the word of God and God honor his word. “The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your heart…., word of faith……if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved”.

  • Repentance; (Prov 28:13),

 “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy”. Repentance is the gift of God, (Act 5:31), the goodness of God lead to repentance. The inner must repent before one can become the recipient of salvation by grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

  • The new birth- new life;

The utmost importance of new life is by the condition; Jesus Christ said condition of new life as meant with the condition of human response but not a severe condition that may punish mankind, it is a condition with God’s love, which says, “You must be born again”, (John 3:7). The new birth – new life is a spiritual birth, it is not natural birth, just the first birth is of the “seed of man”, but of the second birth is of the, “seed of God”, (1 Pet 1: 23). It is not by joining the Church that one can become a new born or having a new life or being a child of God!; you must be born again to become a child of God.

  • The new birth- new life is a spiritual resurrection.

(Eph 2:1-9), it is not by man work that one may proclaim victory he/she has done, and it is by Grace of God through faith in Christ. You participated in water baptism, and rise from the water which signified his death, burial and resurrection. The new birth is partaking if the divine nature of God, (2 Pet 1:4). The divine nature of God which was terminated by sinful nature of man is restored by Jesus Christ. The new birth- new life is by receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior by faith, (John 1:12). The new life is being made the “righteousness of God”, (2 Cor 5:21), and finally the new life is compulsory if you are to become a child of God! “You must be born again”, (John 3:7).

8.5. The new life – new creation.

(2 Cor 5: 17 NIV), the new birth – new life is a new creation. It is clearly stated in the above verse that, “therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come”. In Christ Jesus: we are united with Christ through faith in him, and commitment to him. The new creation: is our redemption, restoration, and fulfillment of God’s purpose in the creation. This purpose takes place in Christ through whom all things were made, (John 1: 3, Col 1: 16), and in whom all things were restored or created a new, (Rom 5:8, 18-23, Eph 2:10).

  1. The steps of new life, a life in Jesus Christ.

The new life or life in Christ Jesus is purpose of God plan to mankind. God has done his part to give his beloved son to die on behalf of man, while man has also a significant role to play so that God plan of salvation is receive by man. To accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour is the most important decision you will ever make your life in order for your life to become new. In reality, that is the beginning of a new life in Christ, and as a new-born child of God, there are many important things or steps you need to understand and do them. These steps for new life in Christ are here as follows.

  • You are saved by Faith; and always go to church;

Your salvation is based purely upon your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.  The scripture says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). You should attend church regularly so that your faith can be strengthened by the preaching of God’s Word, and so you can grow spiritually and be encouraged by the fellowship of other Christians.

  • You are forgiven of all your sins;

The Bible teaches that all mankind has a sinful nature which keeps him separated from God’s presence and will result in eternal death. But Jesus came to suffer the consequences of that sin as our substitute, so that we could be forgiven of sin and have access to God’s presence. When you repented (turned away) from your sins, and asked Jesus to forgive you, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

  • You have the promise of Eternal Life;

God’s Word says that when you place your faith in Christ, you are given eternal life. That is, someday when you’re physical body wears out and dies, your soul will go to be in the Lord’s presence to spend eternity with Him! “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

  • You must keep living for Christ;

You must understand that your salvation is based upon your “continued” relationship with the Lord. The Bible says that Christ will one day present you before God, holy and unblemished “…If you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the Gospel” (Colossians 1:23).

  • You need to pray every day; and read the Bible daily;

Prayer is vital to your spiritual growth. God is your Heavenly Father, and He wants to hear from you and have daily fellowship with you. The Bible tells us to “Pray continually,” that is to pray faithfully every day (1 Thess 5:17). The Bible is God’s Word, and as you read from it every day, it will cause you to grow spiritually (2 Timothy 2:15). As you study His written word (start with the Gospel of John), He will strengthen your faith, speak to your heart, and give you guidance and direction for every need and decision in your life. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalms 119:105).

  • You need to be baptized in Water and live holy live;

At your first opportunity, you should obey the Lord’s command to be baptized in water as a confession of your repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19). Water baptism in itself, (not to be confused with baptism in Holy Spirit) does not save you or wash away your sins, but is an act of your obedience in God’s Word. It symbolically shows that you have died to the old sinful life, and have risen in the newness of the Life of Christ. The scriptures say “…Repent and be baptized, every one of you…” (Acts 2:38).

  • You need to be filled with the Holy Spirit; tell others about Christ;

The Bible also says that the Holy Spirit can “immerse” you with a special power for service, to enable you to live a powerful Christian life, and to be bold in your Christian witness and testimony. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you: and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).  The Bible says that, “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown before my Father in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33).

  1. Personal work/experiences.

The facts of Christian faith developed the qualities and personalities of Leadership that lead to personal works and experiences. It is truly stated that “there are natural and man-made leaders”. Am honestly delighted to share my faith in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who purified hearts and put in the spirit of personal leadership which reflects my personal works and experiences.

It is clearly stated that God is searching for leaders, he is looking for a man/woman who is after his own heart,(1sam 13:14, Ezek 22:30), who will build up a way and who will stand in the gap to intercede for others or who will do the work for others. This is a clear statement constituted the humble kind of services which the Lord Jesus Christ talked of in (Mk10: 43-45) that leaders or position of leadership is the services whether it is secular or spiritual leadership, it mean to serve others, not being a boss. Later on in both secular and spiritual experiences, I joined the movement in 1989 as a red army (SPLA/SPLM) in Polataka face foundation and I was selected to group five as their leader to managed three thousands, seven hundred and seventy five people (3775), but as a born again Christian, I managed the group well and my group was the peaceful group and Centre for prayers among the fifteen groups of Polataka face foundation as you know the careless life of soldiers.

 Secondly, the noble task and rightful ambition I played in those years by the grace of God impressed field commanders and I was sent to school in Uganda by one of my field commander even in the time SPLA was in needed of more soldiers to be deployed in the frontline but he insisted that this young man will be a good leader in the future. From there I went to Uganda and met my Sudan Pentecostal church leaders in Northern Ikaffi at Point Q refugees camp and we built a church but in May, we were chastened by western Nile rebels (Gorgooro) in Uganda and I came back to southern Sudan. In 1995, I led a church of Magali IDP for one and half year where I brought up two other leaders who are now our present pastors in the ministry of the Gospel. I went to Yambio in 1997, where I did the completion of my primary school in Yabongo and joined Comboni Parents’ Secondary School and I was a bit psychologically affected in senior two due to my mum’s death before my senior completion. But still in my mind the called and the vision of God, I decided to join Bible school and I was fully recommended by Rev Yahana Panchol Thiek.

I went to Koboko Bible Training Centre (KBTC) in 2003 where I did three year Advance Diploma in Bible and Theology. From there I started another leadership training of youth in the Church in 2003-2005, and brought up young pastors, for example Philip Malueth, the leader of One Living Church International is one of them in Australia, who has built a church in abroad now. After my graduation in 2005, I came to Sudan and opened a church in Bor town Jonglei State capital by using revival messages in market places, open air, prisons, hospital, and evangelizing the whole area around Bor and we created a ministry called Spiritual Emphasis Voice (SEV).

The SEV grow bigger and developed another combinative ministry, the organization of Churches and Christians Relations development (OCCRD) which was registered at the national level and it’s involved all the denominations with the activities of peace, forgiveness, unity, and reconciliation, in the state. Being the founder of SEV and OCCRD, I realized that leadership needs full approach and true association with people to solve human problems in term of social life, as I experienced it within many years of my ministry activities in the Gospel, I joined another Institute, Pan Africa Institute of Renaissance Studies (PAIRS) in 2008 where I did Diploma in Social Work and Social administration (SWASA).

And because of my tirelessness in a gifted field of education, I decided to join Christian Life Teachings to obtain my Bachelor of Theology and to mentor church ministry and community social services more effectively. In 2007, the experiences I went through and some activities which were seen by the church put more interest on the entire church members of Sudan Pentecostal Church (SPC) to elect me into Bor Area Board Councils as a deputy secretary of the Area Board leadership or Diocese.  All these activities and experiences gave me zeal and a burning heart to serve and upgrade my studies.

I also secured membership and list of professional activities in civic, public and society. My worked, experiences and responsibilities signified in Bor Area Board as a director for evangelism for twelve years and I have plan three crusades in Bor town, I conducted one, Evangelist David Davy from Canada did one, and evangelist Peter Prank did another and we do organized open air, outreach, door to door evangelism, and visitation to hospitals, prisons, ministered to street children, and overnight prayers. Also being member and chief treasurer, and Director of Child Protection, and gender based violence of South Sudan Mental Health Care Organization, (SSMHCO), Founder of Pan African International Research Centre for Social Policy Analysis and Community Organization in collaboration with CCTC, and a teacher in Angutuea Primary school in Maridi county Western Equatoria state.

 I have listed important publications or number of Articles written. Let’s fight corruption and achieve nationalism: The fastest favor for South Sudanese bright future, Published by Citizen News Paper in Juba on 13th August 2013, South Sudan behind mental services: Psychosocial, Published by Citizen News Paper in Juba on 29th Sept 2012 and The Holy Spirit in the believers’ lives, research paper presented to KBTC in partial  fulfillment of the requirement for Advance Diploma in Bible and Theology as well as The impacts of traditional practices which are undermining gender equity in Dinka community: ( Research proposal submitted to the faculty of undergraduate of Christian Teachings Community College in partial fulfillment of the rquirements for Degree Bachelor of Arts double  major and  minor  in Christian education and Business management , August 2010).

  1. Reasons for wanting to study in Christians Life Teachings, (CLT).

Well, the reasons for wanting to study Bachelor of Theology at Christian Life Teachings mean lots. First, Christian Life Teachings has a very important doctrine, and teachings of facts about Jesus Christ, God the father, and the Holy Spirit. Secondly, Christian Life Teachings Bible College is a high qualified institution of Christian ethics, and moral orientation of Christian believes.

 I’m a Christian, a born again Christian and I want to study my degree where I can meet both my academics and spirituality status together. Thirdly, there is no other institute like Christian Life Teachings where I got a clear statement of faith and code of Christian conducts that reflected the image and lifestyle of Jesus Christ. Fourth, Christian Life teaching is the main Christian institution in America missioned to Africa which upgrades Christian leaders that may develop communities where I can get right Foundation and principles of both spiritual and natural leadership. The essential qualities to leaders as I aim to study my Bachelor of Theology is to help me in discipline, vision, wisdom/ knowledge, decision making, humility, integrity, and sincerity with the Lord Jesus Christ and together with people which I could serve or I want to serve.

Fifth, the most important reason to me that I would like to study my Bachelor of Theology in Christian Life Teaching is that, it is not good to have a big head and a big heart of knowledge without Christ but Christian Life Teaching do gives knowledge that is full of Christ vision and wisdom and I would like to study in a college which acknowledges Jesus Christ first in its programs and activities like KBTC where I was first oriented spiritually.

  1. Career and ministry goal.

Honestly and sincerely before the present of my friends and fellow readers, I’m a sure teacher, allowing myself as a servant who is always willing to bring up others in the ministry of the Gospel because I like building up leaders particularly for the work of of the Gospel of Christ Jesus through teachings and seminary programs.

12.1. My careers are here as follows:

  1. Witness Christ to the world, (Matt 28:16-19), Jesus tasked every Christians with great commission. “Go and make disciples of all nations”.
  1. Counseling. (Heb 4:12), “word of God is sharper than double sword”, judge thoughts and attitudes. Tool for counseling: word of God, Holy Spirit, and Jesus.
  1. Integration. Associate with people and share Christ with them
  2. Investigation. Leader must be an investigator, but not ranch to problem.
  3. Developing leaders/ leadership potentiality. Rise up others in Ministry of Gospel.
  4. Progressive studies. Education and development being source of Church mission.
  5. Community Based Social Worker: visioning on delivery of services to people.

12.2. Ministry goal:

My ministry goal is to develop an institution which will cover the entire community with the development programs. I’m indeed willing and interesting to see my target area of education and leadership development cover the goal, aims, vision, and creativity of leadership potentiality benefiting the community both spiritually and academically. I’m sure leaders are good shepherds when they feed their own flock and they are also great blessings to people when they sacrifice themselves to serve others. There is no other Christian ministry goal in Christian life apart from Christ’s goal although you can add other goals later in your future. Therefore, Christ Jesus is the goal of my life, my people and others. Blessed are servants, the leaders who mentor to serve their own people, dreaming to build high institution for our community- God bless South Sudan.

In a brief summary, the family background of David Matiop Gai, the old life which is the worshipped of idols, and local gods of Wual and Benydeng, their demands, rules and regulations are discussed. The new life in Christ which is spiritual journey of the word of God, Repentance, the new birth- new life, the new birth- new life is a spiritual resurrection, the new life- new creation are addressed. Again, all steps to new life are discussed. And finally personal work or experiences, reason to apply to CLT, and gifted careers and ministerial goals are all discussed in details. With Christian Life Teaching Bible College in Africa, and America, this practical work and services will be academically put to CLT library as part of the requirements of my Bachelor degree in Theology cited with twelve (12) credits hours or units for Divinity background dedicated to the future of my kids in Christianity.
