August 21, 2016 (SSB) — The governor of Jonglei State Philip Aguer Panyang Jot has said over 100 SPLA/IO soldiers have been killed when over 3,000 SPLA/IO soldiers counter attack Pajut Military barracks under the operation of Mechanized division.

“The Sudan People Liberation army in opposition lost 101 white army soldiers along the trenches and many bodies still being collected in the bushes where the SPLA had flanged them after they (SPLA/IO soldiers) sneaked into the Pajut Military fence,” Aguer said.

“Meanwhile the SPLA lost 20 soldiers,” he continued. The fighting erupted at 5:00 am and the IO soldiers were repulsed and the counter attack at 6:30 am let to such huge lost.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) leadership in the area affirms its commitment to defuse the ongoing conflict and protect civilians against raids and killing.

The attack on SPLA position violates the August 2015 peace agreement between the government of the republic and the SPLM/IO.

The SPLA/IO and the SPLA have exchanged bullets severally in Pajut as plans by the opposition to overrun the area but the international community is silent over the matter and all being sung is the intervention force.

Jonglei has long suffered from tribal infighting. A large amount of the conflict was over basic resources of food, land, and water, but following the creation of 28 states that divided the country in accordance with the administrative districts of 1956, personal grudges related to the abduction of women and children and theft of cattle had worsened to revenge attacks and killing.

Jonglei has a long history of unrest which affected other parts of Sudan. The First Sudanese Civil War which lasted from 1955 until 1972 broke out with a Southern rebellion in Torit in Jonglei state) against Northern armed officers. In 1983, the Second Sudanese Civil War also broke out at Malualchat in Jonglei.
