Jonglei state celebrates promotion of wildlife officials

August 21, 2016 (SSB) — Jonglei State directorate of wildlife on Saturday celebrates the appointed and promoted officers in the service. The newly appointed wildlife officers in the year 2015/2016 are 2 Generals, 17 Major Generals, 60 Brigadier Generals, 54 Cols. 88 Lt Cols, 130 Majors, 412 Captains, 345 Lt. and 496 2nd Lt.
These officers whose increased roles and responsibilities are evidences to ensure the sustainable wildlife species and the respective ecosystem as to encourage and establish conducive tourists in counties in the state and South Sudan as whole, these varieties of species are the to be protected effectively by all of us.
The constitution mandates both people in uniform and civilians to promote and abide by the lawful manner of executing the determined output for their consumptions.
The Director of wildlife service in Jonglei State Major General Zachariah Atem Manyok said the wildlife resources suffered from effects of conflicts in the last several decades as well as effect of food insecurity which drive local people to hunt bush meats for livelihoods. General Atem accused men in uniform and some individual citizens who have threaten the existence of wildlife species in the area.
“There are also imminent factors that are pockets of syndicates of commercial poaching and trafficking operating across borders in the region posting challenges to conservation efforts in Jonglei State and other areas in the country,” Atem said in a statement while addressing the officials.
“The Jonglei stat wildlife is working at its best to combat wildlife crimes and ensure wildlife conservation objectives are achieved in their mandated areas in the midst of the challenges,” he further said.
South Sudan is endowed with rich wildlife resources and diverse habitants across the country and these resources form one of the important potentials economic resources that would contribute substantially to tourism and economic development if protective measures are employed.
General Atem urges the civil population and the people in uniform to join hands to holdback destructive subsistence survival of wild and wrong usage of the natural resources.
“Wildlife is a ready food to our people through transforming the wild animals into tourism benefits but not benefiting directly from the bush meat which is widely being practiced by our armed forces and civilians,” General Atem continues.
According to General Atem Wildlife conservation and management started in South Sudan early 1930s whereas series of protected areas have been developed and today there are 6 national parks and 13 game reserves.
The country is also home to two of the four largest antelope migration in the world besides these there are the big five variety of birds including migratory species and reptiles.
