South Sudan’s Ugly Mask of Sovereignty

Sovereignty ……what a word!

South Sudan

November 14, 2016 (SSB) — When you think about it, does “sovereignty” (the authority of a state to govern itself) matter to the displaced 2 million South Sudanese?; to those hundreds of thousands of civilians still in the country who face repeated attacks; gruesome killings in their homes; on their highways; to those whose homes have been destroyed; the women and girls who have been abused, brutalised, raped and stripped of their dignity ……… the list goes on and on and on.

As some of the South Sudanese intellectuals sit behind their fancy and expensive electronic devices spewing philosophy through sometimes deplorable intellectual massaging…..we huddle in somewhat protective shelter hoping against hope; hanging on the thread of a prayer that we get a meal or just survive the day from the atrocities of “sovereignty”.

The African Union report collected testimonies as well as forensic evidence that suggests that human rights were rife in the sovereign defending their sovereignty against the gun class opposition…are they also part of the sovereignty…one wonders but we think they are.

Evidence of civilians killed, women and girls raped, civilians dismembered and wait for it…some even forced to drink human blood and eat human flesh…really to what depths have the sovereign sunk to defend or grab the coveted sovereignty medal or is it seat.

And yet the spokesperson of sovereignty had the audacity to say this is all lies…shame on him in the face of such overwhelming evidence…including recently the gang rape of aid workers at Terrain hotel

Those who sing the song of sovereignty forget that this sovereignty came about with the popular vote of the same population being brutalised, damaged, and humiliated every day from the inception of this sovereignty.

As common non entity South Sudanese we ask…What gives the right to a few men and women on either side of the divide of this current brutal civil war to think they can toy with the lives of millions of us?

As we run helter skelter for survival all over the country…the sovereign in Juba now call for a protection force to protect them and keep them in their sovereignty of murder, death and destruction for the rest of us.

The head of the sovereign in Juba just a few days ago called for more killing and destruction through a divide and rule tactic. To us the voiceless and gun less we will continue to pay the dreadful price indiscriminately regardless of tribe, race, gender, religion, tradition, culture or age.

The opposing sovereign is enjoying the good life with a few of his inner circle in the comfort and security of another sovereign state and without shame he announces his return to partake of the sovereign communion located in Juba the cathedral of sovereignty.

Even as his forces batter, brutalise and kill their way to Juba…..South Sudan’s coveted seat of sovereignty. These two men Kiir and Reik are but different sides of the same coin and they are South Sudan’s nexus of evil with equal potion.

We beseech the world, the United Nations, the African Union, IGAD to refrain from Pontius Pilate’s strategy and act for the sake of the collateral damage of sovereignty…the girls, boys, women and men of all ages, religions and tribes.

Feel our pain

We the voiceless and the gunless class
