South Sudanese Students in Zimbabwe Celebrate Belated Independence Day

July 18, 2017 (SSB) — The greatest day in the history of South Sudan was lately celebrated by some students from different universities in Zimbabwe on 17/7/2017. “The day is worth remembering how late it might be to celebrate it,” said one of the vibrant students. The celebration was organised by some of the potential students who wanted to show the spirit of patriotism and togetherness among the South Sudanese Students in Zimbabwe.
The celebration was held at Midlands State University (MSU), City of Gweru, Zimbabwe. Many students came from different universities such as National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and a few from Great Zimbabwe University (GZU). Some students did not make it to Gweru City where the celebration took place because of some inconveniences.
Some of the students were interested to attend but they were incapacitated beyond their capacity whereas others did not attend due to many other reasons. “I cannot attend since my people were killed back home. I cannot celebrate while having tears in my eyes,” said one of the students, who wanted to remain in anonymity.
The celebration commenced in the morning at around 10AM and ended at midday. So many different dignitaries attended the function. It was punctuated by a plethora of words of encouragement from different speakers. It was blessed by the university Chaplain, who described South Sudan as a country whose great hope is invested in its brilliant young people.
The Executive Dean of Students Mr. I. Chaka, who was the Guest of Honour, encouraged South Sudanese students to withhold the spirit of togetherness, hard-work and unity in diversity. Mr. Chaka also stated a lot of things that enhance the development of a country inter alia observance of social affinity amidst the citizens.
“The Independence Day of your country is important in history because it portrays how South Sudan was born in Africa in particular and the world at large,” said the Dean. He also reminded the students to interact positively with local students in Zimbabwe so as to acquire some positive cultural norms that would help them achieve their set goals in life.
His wise words were marked by nods as every student could nod in a respectful agreement to whatever he said.
“We really got a lot of inspiring words from various speakers who described us as ambassadors representing South Sudan,” said one of students Kan Gueh. “It was indeed a wonderful day that the Lord made for us,” stated James Maluach from NUST. This clearly shows how great this day was.
“Today’s celebration was enjoyed by everyone including flies,” said Bol Abol, one of the vibrant students at MSU. “We celebrated and we will continue celebrating as we are going to hold a party tonight,” added Mr. Bol, who is also renowned as Mr. Economist.
It was late, but there is an old adage which goes that “better late than never,” added another student. Therefore, the fact that the celebration was supposed to be on Monday 10th July 2017 could not barricade the function.
