September 10, 2017 (SSB) — On the 2nd of September 2017, an unfortunate incident occurred that caught the attention of the entire nation of Kenya. A Fire gutted Moi Girls’ High School and claimed the lives of nine (9) innocent students. The intensity of the fire left the remains of the bodies of the deceased in an unrecognizable state.

Out of these nine victims who terrifyingly lost their dear lives, one happened to be a South Sudanese citizen; a daughter to South Sudan’s former Chief of General Staffs; Paul Malong Awan. As a community, we were deeply shocked and saddened by the demise of Alakiir Malong Awan.

We, therefore, want to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of Gen. Paul Malong, Aweil Community across the globe and the entire nation of South Sudan. We hope and pray that the good Lord will give you strength and rests her soul in eternal peace.

As a result of this unfortunate turn of events, as a community we are hereby requesting the President of the Republic of South Sudan to release Gen. Paul Malong for the following reasons:

  1. That he be allowed to join the rest of his family members in mourning his beloved late daughter,
  2. Following a request by the Kenyan government through the Ministry of Education requiring that both parents avail themselves for DNA tests to ascertain the identity of the victims that perished in the tragic fire, thus he be granted permission to come and have the DNA test alongside his wife and,
  3. Being aware of Malong’s deteriorating health condition as well, it is our kind request that the government allows him to access better medical services abroad.

Finally, should there be reasons as to why the government should not grant our request then the community demands a clearly outlined explanation to the public in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan.

Thank you,

Here undersigned:

  1. Ngor Atuer; chairperson for Lol state in Kenya,
  2. Kiir Kiir Akol; Chairperson for Aweil State in Kenya and,
  3. Akuei Chier; representative for Aweil East State Chairperson in Kenya.
