Press Release: CEPO Condemns 10 Reported Rape Cases at Juba Teaching Hospital
3 min readJanuary 2, 2018 (SSB) — An 18-year-old girl who was gang-raped is among seven victims of rape who have been reported at the Juba Teaching Hospital, according to a Clinical Officer in charge of Gender-based violence. The incidents happened between Christmas and the New Year 2017
So far ten cases of sexual assaults were registered 24th Dec. 2017 and 1st Jan. 2018 with most of them being from victims of rape, said Dr. Samuel Legge.“The cases that reached to me here in Juba Teaching Hospital are 10 cases all of them are sexual assaults. Three were sexually assaulted and 7 were raped and some of the suspects have been arrested in connections with the rape cases,” he added as reported by eye radio.
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) strongly condemned the incidences. It is horrible, disturbing and unacceptable news. The arrested suspects should face the competent court of law without any delay or favor.
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, says individuals behind the act of the gang-raped and sexually assaulted should be seriously punished by the laws of South Sudan without any excuse.
Past experiences have shown us that some of the perpetrators of such incidences that come from the families of elites normally escape facing the law in the complete court of law. This time these incidences that were arrested will never walk away free from the law. CEPO will officially deploy our observers for these cases
The police and judiciary administration should take these cases serious without any favor of any suspect of any identity. Transparency in the process of providing the due legal response to these cases is needed highly.
The experiences that we have observed in the past where suspects of strong family background or ethnic group walking away free from the court of law trial should not happen again. CEPO Legal Aid Centre will offer free pro-bone service to the families of the survivors. Mr. Yakani stressed
CEPO call upon the police leadership and judiciary to keep the public informed on any development related to this cases. Finally, CEPO will be increasing awareness rising in schools and public for young on sexual gender-based violence and its implications in society.
