CEPO: Civil Society Meeting with the AU Peace and Security Council in Juba

April 19, 2018 (SSB) — African Union Peace and Security Council met civil society today in Juba within their framework of visiting Juba. The meeting was impressive and encouraging between the civil society and the Africa Peace and Security Council over the on-going peace process under IGAD-Led High-Level Revitalization Forum.
At the same time, the AUPSC members met the inter-faith leaders of South Sudan. The civil society viewed the position of the AU Peace and Security Council members as the clear demonstration of commitment for pressuring South Sudan negotiating parties to reach a peace deal in the next phase of HLRF scheduled for 2nd-6th May 2018 in Addis Ababa. Community Empowerment for Progress Organization appreciates AUPSC positive response for the call to dialogue with civil society during their visit to Juba.
It is remarkable that the AUPSC gave time for interact with civil society over matters of Peace and Security in South Sudan.
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says AUPSC meeting will the civil society is promising in terms of AUPSC lobbying the South Sudan negotiating parties over compromises for making peace reaching during the forthcoming HLRF phase in 2nd to 6th May 2018 in Addis Ababa.
The messages from AUPSC were encouraging really. We hope that AUPSC will translate those messages into action. Holding peace spoilers and violators accountable and assuring the civil society on their commitment to seeing the hybrid court is established in an effective manner are remarkable.
Time has come for AUPSC to demonstrate its strength and energy for pushing South Sudan negotiating parties for reaching sustainable peace than temporary peace in South Sudan.
South Sudan is suffering from lack of unity of purpose centered political elites for growth and development of the nation.
The trendy of discontent political elites using violence as a tool for accessing power through power-sharing protocol should be discouraged by AUPSC in South Sudan peace process.
Mr. Yakani stressed CEPO is calling upon AUPSC to be pro-active on the agenda of peace and security in South Sudan since AU has Ad Hoc Committee of five members namely Nigeria, South Africa, Chad, Algeria and Rwanda to support IGAD in implementing peace in South Sudan. The five AUPSC members formed the IGAD Plus.
Finally, CEPO is calling upon AUPSC to push for effective participation of its five members on South Sudan peace process.
