South Sudan notable Firsts

Monday, June 04, 2018 (PW) —- Kuyok Abol Kuyok was born in Rumbek (1964), Bahr el Ghazal. He studied at Rumbek Secondary School (1980-1982) and received his Bachelor of Education (Arts) from the University of Juba in April 1988 as well as a postgraduate diploma in international relations from the University of Khartoum in February 1991. He taught biography in several secondary schools in Khartoum between 1988 and 1993.

He own a Foreign and Commonwealth (FCO) fellowship to study for master’s in education at the University of Hull in 1993. He also holds a master’s of research in education and social science, and a doctorate from the Institute of Education, University of London in 2005 and 2011 respectively. In Great Britain, he served as a research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies in Education (IPSE), London Metropolitan University.

Kuyok returned to South Sudan in October 2009 to join the new Ministry of Higher Education as director general for universities. He was then seconded to the Office of the President as the head of the technical secretariat for the southern Sudan 2011 Taskforce (SS2011TF).

 He was subsequently appointed executive director for the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission (SSACC) in August 2012. He also contributed to teaching educational courses at the College of Education as well at the center for Peace Studies, University of Juba.

Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok (photo left), is the writer of the book South Sudan (book cover photo right): The Notable Firsts, 2015. The book contains the biographies of more than 700 names. Starting from Nyikang the founder of Shilluk kingdom (1500- ) to early traditional and political leaders (1918-2000), the Anya-Nya movement (1955-1972) through southern regional government (1969-1983), the SPLA/M leadership and the first government of the Republic of South Sudan (1983-2011).

And from women pioneers (1661), to academia (1947), clergy (1928), sports, arts and culture. The book is indeed worthy to read as the first attempt to writing our history through biographies. Your history is not history if not written by yourself.
