PRESS RELEASE: THE SPLM/SPLA (IO) POSITION ON SUDAN’S FOREIGN MINISTER’S VISIT TO JUBA

Wednesday, June 06, 2018 (PW) — The leadership of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) welcomes the operationalization of THE COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE 62ND EXTRA-ORDINARY SESSION OF IGAD COUNCIL OF MINISTERS: Article 3; Recommends to the Chairperson of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government to consult with members of the Assembly on the convening of an Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Assembly and a face-to-face meeting between H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit and H.E. Dr. Riek Machar before the 31st Summit of the Assembly of the African Union to be held on 1 and 2 July 2018 in Noukakchott, Mauritania; and, Article 4; Decides to make a final decision on the effective participation of Dr. Riek Machar on the ongoing peace process;

The SPLM/SPLA (IO) welcomes the initiative recently announced in Juba by Sudan’s Foreign Minister, al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed, in a message delivered to President Salva Kiir from Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, as reported on Eye Radio – Juba and Sudan Tribune, on 05/06/2018. The leadership of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) also welcomes any reasonable initiative which can restore peace to the civil populations of South Sudan and we welcome the initiative of President Bashir as supporting the IGAD peace process.

The SPLM/SPLA (IO) reiterates our full commitment to the peace process and shall continue to engage positively with IGAD and all friends of people of South Sudan interested in helping our people achieve peace. We shall also continue to negotiate in good faith to restore peace to our civil population through the High-Level Revitalization Forum (HLRF). However, in light of the regime’s intransigence, continued violation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoH) and massacring of innocent civilians, the SPLM/SPLA (IO) reserves the natural right of self-defense.
