Thursday, June 07, 2018 (PW) — The South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy (SSHURSA) welcomes the prospective face-to-face meeting between the South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the Chairman and Commander-In-Chief of South Sudan’s main armed Opposition Movement: The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO). 

SSHURSA:

  1. Urges all South Sudanese to encourage the two leaders for genuine and frank discussion on isues.
  2. Calls on Jieng Council of Elders to put South Sudan first and allows President Kiir to make independent decisions with Dr Machar in the prospective meeting to restore peace in South Sudan.
  3. Calls on all armed and non-armed Opposition leaders to support this meeting of the two leaders in order to ease tensions as demonstrated by the parties during the roundtable negotiations.
  4. Appeals to countries especially Uganda, Egypt, China, Russia and others not to derail the outcome of the prospective meeting.
  5. Calls on IGAD to use the outcome of the prospective meeting for inclusive peace proposal with the blessing of all parties including South Sudan Opposition Alliance leaders and other stakeholders such as civil society and faith-based groups.
  6. Appeals directly to President Kiir and Dr Machar to discuss matters beyond political power during this meeting, for real sacrifices must be made to restore stability in South Sudan now than later.

SSHURSA recommends that if the two leaders’ meeting yields no positive results, IGAD must transfer the Peace file to United Nations and Troika to proceed with negotiations among the parties. END
