CEPO Press statement: SOUTH SUDAN’S PRESIDENT SALVA KIIR DECLARES PERMANENT CEASEFIRE

Friday, June 29, 2018 (PW) — South Sudan President Salva Kiir declared a permanent ceasefire this evening in what many hoped would mark a definitive end to the ongoing fighting. President Kiir and the opposition on Wednesday agreed to a permanent ceasefire to take effect within 72 hours, raising hopes of a peace deal between the warring parties.
In a presidential order read out on state-run SSBC, Kiir declared a permanent ceasefire throughout the Republic of South Sudan with effect from June 30. President also ordered his forces to allow unhindered access of humanitarian relief convoys to their targeted destination.
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization welcomes and appreciate president Salva Kiir for immediately giving order for his forces to observe the agreed upon permanent ceasefire under the recent Khartoum Declaration of Agreement between the parties in conflict of South Sudan signed 27th June, 2018. It is demonstration of responsibility for making peace and stability prevail in South Sudan.
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says it is remarkable and encouraging action taken by the president for ensuring that the permanent ceasefire agreed upon is holding and effectively observes by his forces.
For any peace accord to prevail also it requires immediately availability of political will that paving way for the will to accept genuine and effective implementation of the agreed upon peace accord under good faith politics.
Making the permanent ceasefire hold and freeing humanitarian access from various forms of restriction to the vulnerable population are the immediate indicators of measuring the conflicting parties will for accepting peaceful settlement of their political difference.
It is moment of final test for the conflicting parties to making peaceful settlement of their political difference attractive to society and global. Mr. Yakani stressed.
CEPO calls upon the other warring parties’ leaders to order their forces to observe the permanent provisions prior 30th June as a deadline of ending any form of hostile act. CEPO also calls for the principles of the parties to urge their forces and support to end hostile and hate propaganda.
Finally, CEPO will be effective observing the warring parties commitment for ordering their respective forces to observe the agreed upon permanent ceasefire in accordance with Khartoum Declaration of Agreement between the parties in conflict of South Sudan.
