Press Release: On the Entebbe Proposal
July 09,2018

Monday, July 9, 2018 (PW) — The leadership of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) would like to inform our members and the people of South Sudan at large, that no agreement has been reached in Entebbe.
The proposal presented by President Yoweri Museveni was discussed verbally, in a cordial environment, but there was no official document presented to the Chairman and Commander in Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO), Dr. Riek Machar Teny-dhuorangun, therefore, the proposal is not official.
The SPLM/SPLA (IO) rejected the proposal as it only focuses on accommodation of politicians and ignores the radical reforms needed in order to effect fundamental change in our country. The SPLM/SPLA (IO) is not waging a struggle for the position of First Vice President, we are waging a protracted struggle for the future of our country.
As we observe the occasion of the seventh anniversary of our independence, we call on our people to have confidence that the SPLM/SPLA (IO) shall not betray the struggle to deliver on the promises of the liberation struggle.
We are following the IGAD peace process and the Movement shall not accept any shortcuts to peace by vested interests, weather locally, within the region, or beyond.
The SPLM/SPLA (IO) is a popular Movement and we call on our members to continue to make their thoughts and aspirations known to the leadership through our popular structures.
The Movement is confident in the peace process and is confident that the only way to end the conflict in our country is through a negotiated settlement.
We are also fully committed to the IGAD peace process and we shall continue negotiating in good faith to achieve a just and honourable peace for our people. However, in light of the regime’s malicious propaganda, intransigence throughout the peace process, their constant violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreements (CoH) and constant aggressive posturing the SPLM/SPLA (IO) reserves our natural right of self-defence.
Signed
CDE MABIOR GARANG DE MABIOR (CHAIRMAN)
