Thursday, July 26, 2018 (PW) — South Sudan’s MPs, who are among the poorest-paid in the region, have received a “bonus” worth as much as $18 million in Juba. The bonus was quietly awarded to the lawmakers in the capital Juba this week, and comes two weeks after they extended the government and the President term in office until 2021.
The lump sum worth $39,000 for each MP from the two houses of parliament could take an average South Sudanese worker several years to earn what each MP has been given.
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is concern about the lack of proper/accurate information to the public about the purpose of the amount of 18 million USD given to the national parliamentarians from National Parliament and Council of States called “Bonus for parliamentarians”. Bonus for parliamentarians for what action?
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says the leadership of the parliament needs to inform the public about the purpose of the received 18 million USD as bonus for parliamentarians.
The streets of Juba and public in the others are calling CEPO for clarity of information about the 18 million USD given to the national parliamentarians. Some states officials at various public institutions are asking for CEPO is the money meant for paying delayed salaries.
At the moment that the salaries for civil servants in the country have not been paid for at least two months and members of enforcement agencies goes on duty without salaries. It is essential to proper accurate and proper information on flow of public funds.
The chance of other misinforming massive public about the purpose of the amount 18 million USD given to the MPs is high and this misinformation can lead to bad action. Mr. Yakani stressed.
Finally, in honorable manner, we are asking the leadership of the national parliament to provide proper and accurate information to the citizens about the given 18 million USD to the parliament where each MP received 39,000 USD as bonus. The streets of Juba and others states citizens are questioning.
