Friday, August 03, 2018 (PW) — Sudanese foreign minister al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed said on Friday that the final signing of the peace agreement will take place as scheduled in Khartoum on 5 August. Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in the South Sudanese Juba this morning, Al-Dirdiri said:” It has been confirmed. The peace agreement will be signed on 5 August around 12 pm.”He pointed out that the signing ceremony will be attended by a number of regional leaders.
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization-CEPO appreciates the efforts of the Sudan mediators to ensure that on Sunday a peace deal is reached on the outstanding issues of governance. CEPO is calling upon the conflicting parties of South Sudan to make effective compromises for attaining peace as a road map for democratic transformation of governance and non-violent settlement of the on-going political crisis in the country
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says reaching a peace deal that inclusive with focus of attaining sustainable peace in the South Sudan is paramount. Peace Agreement is always a tool for paving way for political transformation in non-violent manner. This means absence in addressing the root causes of violence by a peace agreement often the agreement never last long or it collapse at its early period of implementation.
It is easy to sign a peace agreement but the hardship is always linked with the will to implement. We are expecting our conflicting parties of South Sudan to demonstrate genuine political will for implementing the peace deal that they will ink on Sunday. Mr. Yakani stressed
CEPO is urging IGAD to organize immediately IGAD partners meeting for mainstreaming the revitalization of the Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan after Sunday signing of the agreement on the outstanding issues of governance. If Kenya-Nariobi phase of HLRF will be held, then it is essential to have deliberation between IGAD and its partners on the question of funding the implementation of the revitalized ARCSS
Finally, CEPO calls upon IGAD to ensure that the conflicting parties of South Sudan commit themselves for genuine peace deal that offers pathway for sustainable peace in South Sudan.
