Tuesday, August 07, 2018 (PW) — The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) welcomes the signing of the outstanding issues on Governance between Parties to the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, which took place in Khartoum on Sunday 5th August 2018.
This most-recent signing strengthens efforts to revitalize the 2015 Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (ARCSS), and is expected to lead to the achievement of an inclusive, comprehensive peace, restore security, stability and promote national reconciliation in the Republic of South Sudan.
Further, the Commission urges the Parties to commit to an honest and effective implementation of the revitalized Agreement going forward. Undoubtedly, the signing comes as a ray of hope for the people of South Sudan who have witnessed the devastation of war for far too long.
Following the signing, the Commission reminds the Parties of the need to work together in good faith as efforts continue to finalise the revitalization of the remaining Chapters of the ACRSS with consequential amendments.
JMEC looks forward to working with all Parties to ensure the full implementation of the revitalized ARCSS.
The Commission further lauds the leadership of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), the International Community and all partners for their sustained efforts to ensure a lasting peace is achieved in the country.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: COMMUNIQUE OF THE IGAD EXTRA-ORDINARY SUMMIT ON SOUTH SUDAN
Khartoum, Sudan: 5 August 2018. The IGAD Heads of State and Government convened an Extra-Ordinary Summit today 5 August 2018 in Khartoum, Sudan on resolution of the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Omer Hassan Al Bashir, President of the Republic of the Sudan on behalf of H.E. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the current Chairperson of the IGAD Assembly.
During the Summit, the IGAD Heads of State and Government were briefed by H.E. President Al Bashir on the progress made thus far on the Khartoum Declaration Agreement as well as the outstanding issues on governance and security arrangements.
The IGAD leaders hailed the progress achieved by H.E. President Al Bashir on the issues referred to him by the IGAD Summit of the 32nd Extra-Ordinary Assembly of IGAD Heads of State and Government held on 21 June 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that requested President Al Bashir to facilitate a second round of face-to-face talks between President Salva Kiir Mayardit
and Dr Riek Machar, including other South Sudanese parties and representatives of Civil Society, Faith Based leaders, Youth, Women and Business Communities to resolve the outstanding issues.
Cognisant of the momentum created so far, the IGAD leaders resolved that after the signing of the Agreement on Outstanding Issues on Governance and Security Arrangements today, President Omar Hassan Al Bashir shall continue facilitating the talks with the same spirit of inclusivity and commendable vigor until the Revitalized ARCSS is finally signed. In this regard, it was agreed that H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta supports the next phase by deploying a team of experts to support the finalization of the process.
