Chinese Company Releases Public Statement as Sections of Juba-Rumbek Highway are Washed Away by Heavy Rains

On May 23rd, 2020, due to the unprecedented heavy rainfall for several consecutive days around Juba, we have encountered some damages in some section of the road between Juba and Terekeka of Juba-Rumbek Road. The damage happened on two locations including one overflowing section located at Kilometer one (K1) from Bilfam Junction with length of eighty (80) meters, and another section located at Kilometer four (K4) with length of three hundred (300) meters.
Previously during the survey and design period of Juba-Rumbek Road Project, the hydrological data was collected and reflected in the design. The average elevation of the road base compared to the previous road is 2.5 meters, and the drainage capacity was increased by 300%.
The huge and unexpected flood has exceeded the hydrological data as recorded at the precedent years which was serving as the basis for the road design.
Shandong Hi-speed has taken the immediate intervention after noticing the damages at 2 AM on May 23rd, 2020 and restored the accessibility of the road. Together with Project Employer, SDHS is going to review and optimize the design.
Since the project is still in the process of construction, Shandong Hi-speed will make sure to deliver a solid and qualified project together with Project Employer.
