Kuol Tito Yak, a 16 year old Sudanese refugee who was ranked number 4 out of over 776,214 pupils in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education with 440 marks is urging well wishers to support him in his secondary school and University education.
His victory took the country and his school Uthiru Genesis Day and Boarding school in particular to the surprise of sheer determination from an impoverished South Sudanese boy who lived at Kakuma refugee camp in northern Kenya after fleeing his home in the war-torn Sudan.
“In the Kenyan education system, primary school level takes 8 years but Tito took 7 years while completing two classes of 4 and 5 within 2008. Based on our critical assessment, he was too bright for class 4, and when we gave him class 5 exams he scored highly,” the school head teacher Mr. James Gichoya Wahome revealed. The first impression when Gurtong visited his school were the endless praises from his former teachers and students who will never forget Tito’s success driven journey with an ambition to help his countrymen in the now South Sudan.
“Tito is a boy of high integrity, role model, humble and has grown spiritually. This enabled him to posses’ leadership skills since he once served as the school head-boy. Even with his tall height, he never bullied his colleagues,” said Mrs. Anne Wambugu, Tito’s class 7 and 8 teacher.
Tito has managed to secure a place at the Alliance Boys high school in Nairobi according to his head-teacher Mr. Gichoya. Alliance high school is among the best performing national schools in Kenya that would assist Tito to persue his studies and realise his future dream of becoming a doctor or an attorney.
Tito Yak and his head-teacher Mr. Mr. James Gichoya“I cannot support myself, my parents and brothers cannot support me, but through support from outside I can continue with my secondary and University education and perform highly to help my country (South Sudan),” Tito urged well wishers and sponsors
Tito also called on the South Sudanese Ministry of General Education and Instruction and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology to support him with bursary in order to pay his school fees when he joins secondary school this year and later University.
Kuol Tito Yak who comes from a family of 7 was born in Warrap State, Akop County in South Sudan. He fled his country by then the Republic of the Sudan with the help of the United Nations High Commission of Refugees to Kenya’s refugee camp at Kakuma in search of peace, education and shelter. Tito later moved to Kawangware, a sprawling estate in Nairobi where he currently lives with his brothers and cousins who have been a great inspiration to him.
Tito’s success journey shall be highlighted in Gurtong focus, February 2012 issue.
