Opinion Polls: 49% of Greater Equatorians say South Sudan is Going the Right Direction

17 August 2012—(Juba) — The International Republican Institute (IRI) on Friday released the results of the second public opinion polls conducted in Greater Equatoria.

The regional polls carried out from May 21st to June 15th this year assess the views of citizens on democracy and governance, environment and economy, service provisions,  security, constitutional issues, attitudes towards political parties and government, and the general demography of the people of Equatoria region.

A total of one thousand, five hundred and forty seven eligible voters were asked fifty nine questions in the survey –in local languages.

According to the findings, 49 percent of the citizens feel the country is headed in the right direction compare to 54 percent in the previous polls.

President Salva Kiir got a nod of 79 percent in the region on his job, similarly 73 percent of the participants approved of the SPLM’s performance.

However, 43 percent of the people interviewed did not agree with the decision to shut down the oil production in May and June, 2012.

Cattle raiding has also been noted as the biggest security threat to lives in Eastern and Central Equatoria states, while food shortages remains a primary concern for all the people interviewed.

Addressing the press on Friday in Juba, the resident program officer for International Republican Institute, James Tarido explains the significance of the opinion poll.

[James Tarido]: “The main objective really is to help citizens of this country and on the specific regions where we are conducting polls. We want policy makers; political party leaders, government officials to use the results to make more informed policies, more responsible policies so that every government programs are stronger and better, and they do in the end affect citizens in the country.”

This second opinion polls was conducted in partnership with South Sudanese survey research firm, while the questionnaire were provided by government officials, and political parties, and drafted with assistance from the international Opinion Research Business.

The first polls conducted by the International Republican Institute were conducted in September 2011.
