Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Democratic Change

Press for immediate release October 9, 2014

SPLM-DC Washington DC Desk- We are calling on The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), The Troika countries (USA, UK and Norway) and the United Nations (UN) to ensure an inclusive participation of Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, leader of the second largest political party in South Sudan and chairman of the political parties leadership (PPL) in the upcoming 7th round of peace talks on October 16, 14.

The IGAD, Troika and the UN should press Juba authorities to accept a broad based approach for a meaningful   peace and we are asking Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin to intervene and facilitate Dr. Akol’s return to the negotiating table. It is alarming that Juba Authorities violated Dr. Akol’s democratic freedom of movement by imposing a travel ban on him and accompanying delegation to the Peace talks. As a leader of second largest opposition political party and (PPL), Dr. Akol has every right, obligation and responsibility to engage in decision making process without intimidation. It is uncivilized for the authorities in Juba to target and prevent a prominent national leader in caliber of Dr. Akol from traveling from Juba to Addis Ababa in persuading warring parties to embrace peace.

We are specifically calling on the U.S. Special envoy to Sudan and South Sudan Ambassador Donald Booth to listen and open up for encouraging multiparty democracy by engaging not only Juba based SPLM, but rather work with SPLM-DC to offer alternative choice for South Sudanese. It is our hope that Ambassador Booth will directly advise Juba authorities on the importance of inclusivity of SPLM-DC leadership role in the talks and we trust that he will act.

We would like to commend SPLM-DC Minority leader Onyoti Adigo and SPLM nationalist MPs for putting their country first by walking-out of the socking national security bill ever imposed on the South Sudanese by National Legislative Assembly (NLA). This security bill is bad as the transitional National constitution which gave excessive powers to the government to suppress its own citizen.

It is our believe that South Sudanese from all walks of life will rally behind the democratic Change as their only alternative to transform South Sudan to a fully democratic Nation where every bodies liberty, freedom, and dignity are protected.
