The newly appointed Director General of TV and Radio of South Sudan Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Maj. Gen. Khamis Abdallatif Chawul Lom has resigned from his post as from today, November 4, 2014 after only four weeks in the office.

The most important issue is that Paul Jacob, the Director General of the National Ministry of Information disclosed during the marking of the First International Day to end Impunity for Crimes against Journalists at Nyakuron Cultural Center that His Ministry had already suggested names for the three Media Institutions in accordance with the Media Act and that the names are waiting to be tabled before the Council of Ministers.

Information Ministry says Journalists are partners
“The government recognizes Journalists as partners, not as enemies,” said Paul Jacob, the Director General at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, representing the Deputy Minister as Guest of Honor.
He added, “The government is committed to protect Journalists to do their work safely and freely.”
“But,” he warned, “Journalists should be aware of the guidelines, especially that the media bills have been signed into law.”
He also disclosed that his Ministry had suggested names for the Media Institutions in accordance with the Media Act and that the names are going to be presented to the Council of Ministers.
While addressing the audience during the marking of the First International Day to end Impunity for Crimes against Journalists at Nyakuron Cultural Center, on Monday, November 3, 2014, he said government is committed to cooperate with media houses and organizations.
He urged Journalists to observe self-regulation and restrictions as they contribute to freedom of expression. “Go in but know how to come out safe,” he said.
Addressing the same event, Brigadier David Dut Marial of the Ministry of Interior, Republic of South Sudan, urged for the building of the capacity of all security sectors, the judiciary, justice ministry and journalists because professionalism is crucial to ending impunity in the country.
Brigadier Marial said, “Impunity is a result of ignorance by individuals. It is not an institutionalized policy.”
He also said all stakeholders should work hard to achieve peace because laws are better enforced in a stable atmosphere.
Brigadier Marial said the work of police is similar to that of the Journalists because both need information for the good of the country. “Information brought by journalists is beneficial to the police because journalists know how to investigate,” he asserted.
“Let us work jointly for the safety and protection of Journalists as this represents the safety and protection of government and citizens as well,” Marial said.
He had earlier said his Ministry is just one of the security sectors that enforce law and order in the country and that the Ministry of Defense’s Military Intelligence (MI) is one of them.
It is worth mentioning that the occasion was organized by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) in collaboration with local media organizations, civil society and government, with UNESCO as the mandated organization.
