Bor town: at least 8,052 commit adultery every year!!!
By Peter Chol Duom
One of my friends committed adultery last week. The three days I visited him in a police cell surprised me with shocking number of inmates who had committed adultery. The first day was 31 adulterers, second day was 14 adulterers, and the third day was 21 adulterers.
Their ages range from 20 – 38 years old. On average, at least 22 young men and women commits adultery every night/day. A similar number is bailed out every day. By multiplying the average number (22) by 366 days in a year, you will get the above shocking number (8,052) young men and women committing adultery every year in Bor town. If you are in Bor Town, please try to visit Bor town Police station, and verify the daily number of adulterers.
On average 22 is the number of young men and women who are caught red-handed every night/day in Bor town. This means the percentage that commits adultery every night could be smaller (below 30%) than the bigger number who managed to play the game without being caught. That’s to say professional adulterers.
All of us including you and myself are ghost adulterers in Bor Town because we are not caught red-handed. A thief is called a thief when he is caught red-handed.
Some reasons behind adulterous relationships in Bor town are as follows:
1) Many of our youth have joined military training camp at Panyier. The few youth who are strolling and sexually starved in Bor town have taken the advantage of the situation.
2) Massive demand of dowries. Getting a beautiful lady in Bor needs you to have a fat account with not less than 100,000 SSP plus cows. But with some few South Sudanese pounds in your pocket, you can joke around with other people’s wives.
3) Many lost their dear husbands during December, 2013 crisis. Some few individuals have started abusing widows with their small money they are providing. Please DEAD husbands wake up and see those who are grabbing your wives.
4) The Scraping off of “thon-gawich” where one is not allowed to father a non-biological child. Our lawyers from Justice Ministry should understand laws or else get trained ……..To be brief, there are so many reasons as to why there is creasing rate of adultery in Bor town.
To my readers, I know some of you are great thinkers better than me. You may add some dissimilar points to supplement the one listed above.
Our Dinka-Bor great traditional paramount chiefs were great thinkers in their time. People like Deng Malual, Ajang Duot and Mabior Ngueny were very wise compare to our MPs with CDF bellies. These 3 great leaders mentioned above had played a tremendous role in regulating the marriages in their time.
To get a lady to marry, you pay only 31 cows. If you commit adultery, you are fined with 6 cows to neutralize your active sexual organ. If you bear children with married woman, you are considered to be “Thon-gawich” meaning you do not deserve to father those children but the one who married that woman whether he is infertile, old, or dead, deserve right of fathering the children.
That was so great and I consider Deng Malual, Ajang Duot and Mabior Ngueny to be one of greatest leaders in our history.
In the past, when a young man of my age committed adultery, he becomes emotional disturbed and always feels a shame to sit with his age mates. His age mates mock him wherever he is. But today having concubine is like having an ATM card.
Today, the story is different and upside down. If you bear children with a woman who had been married with 30 cows or more, then you are granted a right to father or own the children. Also, when you commit adultery you are fined with 9,300 SSP or 6 cows. There are so many source of getting money. Whether you are NGO worker, pay master, banker etc getting 9,300 has become very easy.
In conclusion, we youth in particular young men have been accused by our elders (40 years above) of grabbing their young women in Bor town. Our elders are asking this question: why do youth enjoy our young women than single ladies? Yes customers prefer cheap things and that is why some young men are interested in married women.
On the other hand, it pains when you see your wife going with someone else similarly to other person. We should not take advantage of December, 2013 crisis. Our paramount chiefs, chiefs, sub-chiefs and community elders should sit down to regulate the marriages. They should also fine those committing adultery with cows but not in form of money because cows are hard to get.
This will actually give hard time to the adulterers in getting the number of cows required and young men who are intending to commit adultery can learn testimonies from adulterers who had been fined with cows and not money.
May Almighty God bring peace to our beloved country South Sudan. One Nation one People!!
