South Sudan must be weaned off war

June 8, 2015 (SSB)  —   The chairlady, Awut Mayom, has condemned the act of impunity carried out by the armed youth group under the influence of the militias that have come up lately in the state, making it one of the terrible states in South Sudan to live.

It is very appalling situation since independence because Lakes state has been on headlines for killing, like the killing of security personnel in Maper county in August 2014 and also in Cueibet county and three times in Akot Payam. Yet, these security personnel were sent purposely to protect the lives and properties of the citizens of Lakes state.

It sad and astonishing sometimes to discover that our politicians might have had hands in arming the civilians for their political gains.   It is very confusing when you hear about Lakes states news because only in killing does it feature as if it is only Lakes state communities that have guns in South Sudan.

Gelweng was not form as armed militias killing machine; it was established only to defend their cattle during the struggle for independent of South Sudan.

The government attempt to burn down civilian mud homes does not help the precarious situation.  Also, what do we expect when there are equal military powers for both civilians and security personnel of South Sudan in Lakes state?

The only think I don’t understand is why these soldiers always burn down this village? Does it means that Akot is the only place defined in the constitution of South Sudan to be burn down to ashes when problem arise between Gelweng and the soldiers?
