President Salva Kiir arrives into Johannesburg to participate at the African Union Submit

The President of the Republic of South Sudan, H. E. Gen. Salva Kiir and the accompanying delegation arrives in Johannesburg, South African on Saturday to participate at the 25th African Union Summit whereby the Twenty Fifth (25th) Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union shall take place at Sandton International Conference Center in Johannesburg, South Africa on June 14 and 15 under the theme “Year of Women Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”.
The African Union is a continental union consisting of 54 countries in Africa and was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and was launched on July 9, 2002 in South Africa, with the aim of replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
The Republic of South Sudan became the newest and the youngest African Union member state and was officially welcomed to the African Union as the 54th nation after its independence in July 2011 and after raising its flag in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The most important decisions of the AU are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual meeting of the heads of state and government of its member states. The AU’s secretariat is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
One of the objectives of the AU is to “promote peace, security, and stability on the continent”. Among its principles is ‘Peaceful resolution of conflicts among Member States of the Union through such appropriate means as may be decided upon by the Assembly’. The primary body charged with implementing these objectives and principles is the Peace and Security Council.
H. E. President Salva Kiir and the accompanying delegation was received at Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg by Hon. Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, The South Sudan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H. E. Philip Jada Natana, South Sudan Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa.
