Press Statement from the Rebels on the Gov’t Travel Ban on Opposition Leaders
PRESS STATEMENT
August 6, 2015
- The leadership of the SPLM/SPLA would like to express grave concern over the relentless attempt by Juba regime to manipulate the exclusivity of the peace process by imposing travel ban on the leadership of legitimate opposition parties which are actually the genuine other parties to participate in the peace process as per the language of the proposed compromise document to end the conflict in South Sudan. In stead of complying with the basic rules of inclusivity in this process, Juba has been sending only the parties which speak their language, most of who hold executive portfolio in the current Kiir’s cabinet.
- The SPLM/SPLA Leadership applaud the leadership of IGAD Plus for taking a decisive action by demanding the participation of the legitimate and bonafide other parties under the leadership of Dr. Lam Akol who has been languishing in unconstitutional travel ban since last year. This has rejuvenated our faith in the IGAD -PLUS mediation as it has demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity and political pluralism in this process.
- Further more, the SPLM Leadership would like to seize this opportunity to inform the leadership of IGAD Plus and the international community that the movement remains committed to the agreed principles of inclusive peace making process involving true civil society organizations not the government organized none governmental organizations (GONGOS), genuine political parties, faith based organization, women blocks and the two waring parties.
- Ultimately, The SPLM/SPLA would like to reiterate its commitment to bringing a just and lasting peace to our people and urge the region and the world to persuade the defecto Salva Kiir that a negotiated settlement is the only way to end the conflict in South Sudan. We have come to Addis with the hope that Kiir’s delegation will meet us and other stake holders half way to resolve this devastating conflict once and for all
