What is wrong with Bor electricity power station since 2007?
By Deu Lueth Ader, Bor, South Sudan
September 11, 2015 (SSB) — In its support to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on 9 January 2005, the Egyptian Government without hesitation came and fulfilled what it has pledged to do so after reaching a peace deal in South Sudan. They vowed to give electricity power countrywide; as a result Bor Town has taken the lead and having its power station built by the brilliant engineers from Egypt. And we thanked them for that unutterable gift.
It is so imperative to disclose to the readers that since then, nothing has been felt of by the residents of Bor town as the people whom the power is taken to them. Hence; I would like to retrospect that crucial support from the Government of Egypt and prior to get onto the Computer keyboard to express these views, I had some alternatives in facts on how this important project should be revive and sustain.
There are some economic theories where government can resort to at the time of recess, it privatizes some of its institutions that are subject to collapsing or in a situation where the government is lame to finance some of its public institution, and vice versa it also generalizes its private corporations to be administered at public policies in a situation where the individuals who are managing the institution tend to divert the objectives of the corporation to their personal gain.
In the context of this case, the public corporation which is the electricity power station in Bor is on the verge of collapsing and which needs the urgent rescue by all means from the State Government. There are so many respected business people in South Sudan who can undoubtedly manage the revival of the said Corporation.
This electricity has the capacity to illuminate the whole town if it is tendered out to the profitable entity, for I don’t see any reason for the State Government to deny being tendered it out to the business corporations. However; for the welfare of the residents of Bor Town, electricity power station must be privatized, Egyptian didn’t give it such that they are consulted should any failure to administer it occur. It is outright unacceptable that since this electricity power station was built in Bor, it has never operated for the reason known to State Government.
The residents are after welfare irrespective of the costs they might be charged of by any entity that would manage the electricity. There are complicated issues related to residence in Bor Town, which I think the installation of power in their houses would encourage their quick resettlement for those who have acquired legal lands. For, the power is applicable solely for the areas which are demarcated for legal residential and not random residential as the case it is, thus; it would help mitigate the degree of crimes which have engulfed the Town currently.
Houses are being stormed by the gunmen at night, when there is a light all over the residential areas the criminals would relatively refrain from such acts, because it will ease the patrolling of security personnel at any Zero hour without fear. This will be another way for State Government to combat criminality in Town. I’m strongly urging the State Government to try its level best to privatize the Electricity Power Station which has been all along idle, neither party is benefiting the Egyptian whom they gave us this precious gift or the residents.
I have seized this opportunity to alert the sleeping government in Jonglei State that idleness of this institution is embarrassing and can discourage other well-wishers who might be willing to help the State through developmental projects from stepping in.
Therefore; I and the entire residents of the town would love to hear from your esteemed authority at least to invite bids from business entities in regard to this important electricity power station. I’ m also appealing to the State government to register a short visit to the site, it has been used as a dumping site, thereafter you may think of what to do with it.
