December 2, 2015 (SSB)  —  South Sudanese journalists have attended five-day media training in Nairobi Kenya. The training was organized by Germany organization (DW – Akademie) and dealt with media issues such as developing journalistic skills in various fields of their specialization: reporting using mobile phones both in radio and television stories.

The journalists also met with some Kenyan journalists who have attended the training and who are working with different media houses in Kenya. There was great learning of experiences from each other, learning more on reporting on conflicts stories, for instance.

The DW—Akademie facilitators urged South Sudanese journalists to be more professionals when reporting conflict stories. They stressed that journalists should always consider some ethics before reporting and publishing the story. The aim of the workshop was to train South Sudanese journalists and the host country on mobile reporting.

The DW Akademie is a leading Germany international media broadcasting that has pilot projects that train young journalists across the world like in Libya, Kenya, Egypt, Myanmar, and Haiti with the goal to transform the media group.

The question whether media industry as a strong tool to be used in development in a country, is not a question to be debated since it has an immense sagacity of progress in every country. The media as a forth state is nevertheless to be ignored and further censor but rather the media participants including their workers should be given legal grounds to operate smoothly without sabotage to their duties.

The United Nations Millennium Declaration made it clear that “development and peace” are inseparably connected and that their achievement will depend significantly on whether conflicts are ended and peaceful co-existence is possible through media. So development and media are two ways traffic, without which, it can’t never prosper.

“To achieve this Republic of South Sudan must advance the causes of security, development and human rights together, otherwise none will succeed. Humanity will not enjoy security without development, it will not enjoy development without security, it will not enjoy both development , and security without the legal right to receive, impart ,seek and broadcast in any form as it is stipulated in our transitional constitution (Art: 24) and it will not enjoy either without respect for human rights”.

This media workshop therefore set the bases for the South Sudanese Journalists in Kenya to acquire all the professional media skills which will enable them to report, write articles and work more on radio mobile reporting which is now the latest trend in the big media industries in the world.

One among the participants lamented that South Sudan is a young and prosperous country which will not develop if media industry is not free or rather given all the privileges to operate without hindrances or roadblocks in achieving its goals.

We as “South Sudanese journalists” are determining to fight the corruption and inhumane practices in our country if the governments cooperate with us.
