Cavendish or Busoga University: This is More of the same Dish
By Malith Alier, Juba, South Sudan
January 19, 2016 (SSB) — The trouble over higher education in South Sudan never gets uglier. Two or three days ago what was known to be Cavendish university learning centre in Juba became a centre of dispute right from the source in Uganda. The mother university in Kampala is thought to have been taken over by new proprietors who in turn wanted to repatriate the South Sudan extension.
Before, the dissolution of government in July 2013, the then Higher Education Minister Dr. Adwok Nyaba clamped down on the education interlocutors who happened to be mostly from Uganda. Dr. Nyaba was praised and condemned equally by those who wanted to promote quality education and by those who wanted to catch up respectively.
Nyaba scored some successes but his mission was cut short by sacking of the government and the new government did not consider that as a priority.
The higher education is back at square one. The previously banned universities are back and kicking like the boda bodas of Aleu Ayeny. They’re taking advantage of the lug in the enforcement of regulations.
The presence of such controversial universities is an insult to injury in the country. The country is already awash with fake certificates collected from far and wide. This academic assault is brought closer home by those who are only interested in money but not quality and research reputation. The repugnant proprietors have taken on chameleonic tactics of change from Cavendish-to-Busoga-to-Bridge-to-something and verse versa.
The good news is that Dr. Nyaba may be back soon on higher education slot and rest assured that these surrogates are put on notice.
