Customary and statutory laws training for traditional chiefs begins in Bor

May 23, 2016 (SSB) — The refresher training on customary and statutory laws for traditional chiefs has begun in Jonglei state on Monday bringing together chiefs of Greater Bor from the three counties. The training under the theme strengthening the capacity for traditional authorities in the conflict resolution mechanism in the Greater Bor Area began on May 23rd to 27th 2016.
The conference was organized by viable support to transition and stability (VISTA) in collaboration with State government through the funding of USAID Program to enable Traditional Leaders of the Greater Bor-Dinka to peace building mechanism skills, roles of Dinka customary law in peace building, the roles of statutory laws in traditional authority leadership, trauma healing awareness skills and transitional justice and traditional justice.
The conference intends to deliberate on issues related to peace building mechanism, customary law, statutory laws, transitional justice and traditional justice, trauma healing and media training.
The advisor to the governor on economic affairs and the former minister for local government Ding Akol Ding, on behalf of Jonglei state government applauded USAID for supporting peace building program.
He urged the traditional leaders to the responsibility of their criminals and members of the community not to cause the country any harm such as of Murle community who last month killed over 200 people, abducted over 100 children and 2000 herd of cattle.
The program began with review of the resolution of the Intra-Bor Dinka conference held April 2016. The conference is expected to produce consolidated Actions and General Resolutions of the Greater Bor Dinka Community to restore peace and harmony among the three counties and the neighboring communities including adopting customary laws that will be signed into law for self administration by the Greater Bor Community.
