Dr. John Garang University staff on strike over salary

May 24, 2016 (SSB) — The staff of Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and technology in Bor town the capital of Jonglei state to strike tomorrow after three months of no pay

Several ultimatums have been given to the government by the staff to settle salaries of the working staff something that has failed for over 100 days.

The university employees had given the government a seven day ultimatum to respond to their complaint about unpaid salaries.

Speaking on Tuesday, after the meeting of the General Assembly for the Public Universities in South Sudan at Juba University premise, Philip Finish Apollo, member of academic staff, said the public universities said the strike will start as of tomorrow.

Academic staffs of Dr. John Garang Memorial University of science and technology have declined to make comments to the media before strike take hold tomorrow Wednesday.

Juba, Bahr el Ghazel, Upper Nile, John Garang, and Rumbek Universities are among the higher education institutions participating in the strike.

Peter Adwok, higher education minister for the transitional government of national unity, was quoted on Radio Tamazuj as saying “lecturers have the right to go for strike. Adwok made the remarks over the weekend during a forum at Green Rokon.

Many attempts made to reach Jonglei state minister for education and social welfare on government comments on the matter did not materialize.
