  1. The story of the chicken and the eagle

May 31, 2016 (SSB) — Once upon a time Chicken and Eagle were good friends; they lived together and shared everything, but both were featherless. One day they decided to think of flying and they decided that they should sew or stitch feathers on their wings. Eagle sewed his feathers on and tried flying, He got on well and everyone was very happy. Chickens did not have a sewing needle and so he decided to borrow from Eagle. Eagle gave it to him and told him to handle it carefully because it was the only remaining needle that he had.

Chicken took the needle and started sewing feathers on his wings whilst also watching Eagle”, Because Chicken was distracted by Eagle, he did not sew his feathers on so well;

He tried also to fly, But Chicken couldn’t fly as well as Eagle did, and as he was flying several times, he lost the needle.

Eagle came back and requested for his needle. Chicken told him, “Wait my dear, Let me look for it because I can’t remember where I have put it”.

Eagle told him, I remember telling you to handle it with care and if you have lost it, I will always be taking your chicks until you bring back my needle.

Chicken started looking and searching for the needle everywhere he went, whether he is in the rubbish or whenever he is eating, but up to date, he is still searching for the needle whilst Eagle is always taking his chicks.

REFLECTIONS:

  1. Why do we punish innocent mistakes?
  2. What would be a more proportional compensation of Chicken accidentally loosing Eagle’s needle?

STORY ABOUT LION, LEOPARD, HYENA, SNAKE AND FOX: What is Built on Disagreement Ends in Destruction

Lt Gen. Lion, Maj Gen. Leopard, Pvt. Snake, Brig Gen. Hyena, and Capt. Fox gathered for a meeting. In this meeting they decided to live in one Community, and help each other in good and bad times. But; Capt. Fox told them, “If we want to live together, ‘it is important to know each other’s habits and manners very well and everyone has to tell us what he likes and what he doesn’t like;”

  • Lt Gen. Lion said, “I don’t like noise.”
  • Maj Gen. Leopard said, “I don’t like people staring at me for a long time.”
  • Brig Gen. Hyena said, “I don’t like any one of you to move around my house.”
  • Snake said, “I don’t like someone stepping on my tail.” Lt Gen. Lion asked Capt. Fox, “What do you say?”
  • Fox replied, “Our village is a failed village, it is not going to last long.”

One day Capt. Fox came to Maj Gen. Leopard and said, “This is not fair my dear General, how can you stay hunger like this and there is a lot of fat meat in Brig Gen. Hyena’s house?”

Maj Gen. Leopard moved very fast after hearing this to Brig. Hyena’s house. He moved around the house until he got tired, but he couldn’t get in, so he decided to go back.

When Brig. Hyena came and found the footprint of Maj Gen. Leopard, he became very angry and went straight to see Gen. Leopard, when he reached, he found the group were having a meeting under the big tree where they usually have the meetings.

Brig. Hyena sat and kept looking at Maj Gen. Leopard all the times, Gen. Leopard got so angry and told Brig. Hyena, “Didn’t I say I don’t like anyone looking at me like this?

Then Gen. Leopard jumped on Brig. Hyena and they started wrestling and making a lot of noise, 1st Lt. Gen Lion furious and started beating everyone.

In this chaos, someone stepped on Pvt. Snake’s tail, and then Snake started biting whoever was around him.

This was the collapse of this Community, Col. Fox ran away and kept saying,

“What is built with disagreement, will end up in failure.”

REFLECTIONS:

  1. Do you notice a similarity between this story from Dinka (Jaang) Community and the one from Nuer (Naath) Community?
  2. Where are Equatorians from here?
  3. How did Col. Fox know that their village was going to be a failed village?
  4. What does a failed and what does a successful Community look like?
