July 8, 2016 (SSB) — The Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Washington D.C. would like to inform the international community that today Friday July 8, 2016 there was an exchange of gunfire between the Presidential Guards and the Guards of First Vice President Riek Machar Teny.
This incident took place at J1 Presidential Palace as President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the First Vice President Riek Machar Teny and Vice President Wani Igga were in closed security meetings.
The killing of five government security officers on the night of Thursday July 7, 2016 at a security checkpoint had tensions running high and led to a misunderstanding today at J1 thus leading to the shooting incident.
The situation has been calmed down and President Salva Kiir Mayardit, First Vice President Riek Machar Teny and Vice President Wani Igga were not affected.
The President, the First Vice President and Vice President have given a joint statement to assure the people of South Sudan that this is an unfortunate incident and the citizens are urged to be calm.
Today July 8, 2016, President Salva Kiir Mayardit issued a Presidential decree on the formation of a Joint Investigation Committee chaired by Lt. General Alfred Lado Gore, the Minister of Interior.
The mandate of the joint investigative committee is to investigate the two shooting incidents on the night of July 7 and July 8, 2016.
