President Kiir: We have been challenged economically as a nation
By Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, Juba, South Sudan
November 24, 2016 (SSB) — We have been challenged economically as a nation and you my people may be thinking that the government is not doing anything to counter this. I am glad to inform you that we are working on how to achieve a sustainable economic growth. We are promoting social equity and this will mean giving equal opportunities in all fields to all the citizens of south Sudan in a healthy environment.
Before anything of this sort is achieved, security and safety must be guaranteed to all the citizens of south Sudan because it’s only in a peaceful and safe environment people can get to work on issues affecting them or the nation as a whole on daily basis. My government is going to release funds to improve our road conditions and security will be deployed in areas where unknown gunmen have been maiming our citizens.
Our first step is to ensure citizens are traveling freely within the country without any fear of bad road conditions or being attacked by criminals. We want to promote inter-state trade and this is only achievable when there is access to good roads and a good security. I want to see people of different states doing business together. Exchange of local products across the country is what we are promoting as it will improve trade in the whole nation.
Ecological health is another thing that we are working on. We are working on how to improve both human health and the conditions of our environment as these two are dependent of one another. Our health system isn’t to the standards and that’s why many of our people seek treatment outside the country anytime they are sick. My government will allocate funds to improve the conditions of our hospitals and we as citizens need to take care of our environment.
We are going to enable, facilitate and partner with businesses or private sectors in our country. There is an urge for us to work hand in hand. We will promote local businesses as they are source of income for the common man. In every country that is excelling economically, local products are of great impact on the economy. Local farmers needing any assistance will be helped to achieve their goals. Things like fertilizers will be distributed among our local farmers.
Agricultural products are the main contributors towards economic growth in any country. Let’s promote farming and any other agricultural activity in our nation. We are not yet certain but we are planning to be giving things like seeds and farm tools to our local farmers just to lessen the burden and cost of production. So my dear people, you will benefit dearly whether you are in the city or in the village because we are extending our hand to all directions.
Also we are going to partner with educational institutions. You all know education is crucial for anything or any plan to be executed in this modern days. Our citizens need knowledge on how to do business and how to utilize the scarce resources available in our nation. My government encourages and promote entrepreneurship. We need young elites to start businesses of their own. The government will give you the necessary assistance you will need.
This is a fraction of what we are going and planning to do to promote a resilient economy.
