"We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, with so little, for so long, we are now qualified to do anything, with nothing" By Konstantin Josef Jireček, a Czech historian, diplomat and slavist.

The Most Reverend Opportunities Missed

By Atilieu Diing Akol, Kigali, Rwanda

opinion matters

They were moving too fast

Taking advantage of the disaster

Hurrying to fill their endless pockets

Looting, proud and with no regret

Intimidation to control loyalty

Feeding us lies and half truths

Filing class action suits to blind

Their delight in exposing theft unmatched

Keenly alert to any gazing opportunity

Opportunist or did you seize the opportunity?

They engaged us in small talk

Promises of paradise and flowing milk

And went on for hours to dark

About past alliances and the aftermath

Taking chances for whatever gain

Checking every entrance for pay

Now the palace is with them

Still they are miserable and cry foul

And the public that was once ignored

Now up in arms against you opportunists

They thought us foolish

Pillaging our youth with disaster

Siphoning our love and pride for the land

Snacking at midnight as we snore

And like the mighty fearless shark

Praying on their own with no recourse

Now we hope you find what you seek

Most reverend opportunist

Help us understand your desires

If you are assets or miserable leeches

For we will not carry opportunists!

Our backs are already broken enough.
