"We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, with so little, for so long, we are now qualified to do anything, with nothing" By Konstantin Josef Jireček, a Czech historian, diplomat and slavist.

Tears and Blood in the Land of Cush

By Reech Mayen, Kampala, Uganda

Oh Cush!

Land of peace

Bullets tear through the rips mercilessly

Tears and blood gush endlessly

Mothers wail for their dying infants

Maternity deaths reign

Oh Cush!

Land of hope

Deaths swallow opportunities

Hyenas giggle over corpses

Larvae creep on unburied bodies

Birds peck on human bones

Oh Cush!

Land of abundance

Fear erodes the soil

Shrapnel drive off the farmers

Kids wither in the bushes

Hunger gnaws the tummies

Oh Cush!

Land of diversity

Sectarianism is nurtured

Bigotry compromises unity

Prejudice masks nationalism

Hatred towers over love

Oh Cush!

Land of freedom

Tongues are tied at the palates

Expressions attract harassment

Human Rights are practically banned

Bullying and torturing are systematize

Oh Cush!

Land of great ancestors

Bless the nation with peace

Bless the nation with hope

Bless the nation with wealth

Bless the nation with unity
