CEPO appeals to warring parties in the Addis Consultation to compromise for peace

CEPO press release: Appeal for South Sudan Parties at the Consultative meeting in Addis Ababa – May 11-12, 2018 — Ethiopia, to Make Compromises for Peace to Prevail in South Sudan.

Edmund Yakani
MR. EDMUND YAKANI BERIZILIOUS is the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), a Juba-based South Sudanese civil society organization.

Wednesday, May 09, 2018 (PW) — The Inter-governmental Authority on Development on May 7th, 2018 invited key five representatives of each of the South Sudan parties to go to Ethiopia for consultations from May 10th to 12th, 2018. The IGAD Council of Ministers has decided to intensify its engagement with the parties with a view to identifying possible options for unlocking the stalemate during the next peace talks.

Community Empowerment for Progress Organization appreciate IGAD for decision of conducting consultations prior the next phase of HLRF scheduled for 17th to 21st May, 2018. It is good approach for making next phase of HLRF successful. CEPO is strongly calling upon the South Sudan parties to take this opportunity serious and demonstrate to the citizens that they are responsible enough to opt out of war/violence.

The primary responsibility of making peace prevail is at the hands of the South Sudanese parties. The violence is the option and it never gains. This is clear opportunity IGAD offer for them to tell the citizens that they do care about the citizens suffering and they are ready to stop the violence and opt to sort out their political difference without harming the citizens.

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO says the citizens are so auger to hear the outcomes of the parties’ consultations on 12th May, 2018. Any negative outcomes of the consultations it will be demobilizing and disturbing, because that means the parties opt to resolve their political difference in violent manner. That means, still more killing of civilians, displacements and creation of suffering for civilians in various form while the principals of the parties are not directly facing the various forms of suffering as a results of their decisions after the consultations.

Our appeal to the parties is whatever, the political difference you have towards each other kindly in human feeling, create some compromises that will make you all to opt out of war/violence. The number of the children, elderly and other vulnerable groups suffering from the on-going violence is really disturbing and making people questioned whether the parties are having human feelings towards the suffering of people from their actions and decisions. Mr. Yakani stressed.

CEPO is urging the South Sudan to take responsibility of deciding to compromise and opt to resolve their political difference non-violently. Violent approach from resolve political disputes at the current moment is totally destructive and inhuman.

Time has come for the parties to buy peace. The price of peace is expensive and has some biter pills. Responsible leaders are characterized by taking biter pills, buying higher price and losing political privileges for the sake of keeping their civilians free from any form of suffer that will be associated with their act or decision.

Kindly, South Sudanese parties decide and act to compromise for peace and opting out of war/violence from 11th through 12th May, 2018. We are counting on your decisions for making peace to prevail or violence/suffering of civilians to continue. Making Peace prevail is our expectation and making suffering/violence continue is our fear.

DECIDE TO CHOICE. WE ARE WAITING FOR IGAD DECLARATION OF YOUR CHOICE ON THE 12TH MAY, 2018.
