Is Kenya’s Political Handshake a Perfect Peace Modality for Conflict Resolution in South Sudan? (Part 2)
By Aketch Peter Amet, Nairobi, Kenya
Thursday, January 02, 2020 (PW) — As I did highlight the differences and similarities between the conflicts in South Sudan and that of the Kenya based on how and when they were germinated. I have also briefly stated how the leaders have faced this evil and how they started to fight the evils of the tribalism among their citizens. I would also like to add how this could possibly end our sufferings, but with a condition to be fulfilled first by the Principals to the Agreement.
Though this modality is undoubtedly and possibly a perfect means for ending the conflict, it could also mean ending the leadership of the current leaders. This is because adopting this would mean paving way forward for the democratization and transparency in governance, which could result into a clean and hygienic politics that our leaders have been afraid of and never been subscribing to it.
Today, I am trying to highlight how this political play was initiated and adopted in Kenyan context. Not everyone can become a hero, it is only a person whose soul cares for their brothers and sisters who is likely to be crowned a hero. So is Raila Odinga in Kenya today. The saying of becoming “your brothers’ and sisters’ keepers’ attitude and ideology” is capable of changing the narrative of our issues if many adopt it. This is the heroic game played by the Kenya opposition leader to bring reconciliation and much better, if not a lasting unity to the Kenyans.
However, for the Kenya’s model of conflict resolution to succeed in our context, it is anticipated this opinion’s writer to only needs that same grown-ups and manly decision to be made by a person of Dr. Machar and his group just like Odinga’s group dropped their ambitions and interests for the Country. Dr. Macahr will have to come forward boldly and on a one-on-one mission for reconciliation between him and President Kiir.
It is suggested that they sit to discuss and look back to where they slipped-off the road to a New Sudan they fought for and the freedom they prided themselves to have brought to South Sudanese, order for the Country to realize an everlasting peace and a national unity. This is believed so because Dr. Machar is presumably and roughly believed to be the Victim and only the request for an all-out reconciliation and forgiveness from the victim will bring a lasting peace and unity to fruition to the people who are in a dire need.
My opinion to say only Dr. Machar’s similar approach to this conflict of ours is paramount and instrumental to cement a permanent co-existence among South Sudanese though this can be seen an awkward bell ringing, it is worth doing for his good and the good of all South Sudanese he is fighting for. This can be for the betterment of his legacy and as well for the benefits of the suffering South Sudanese populace.
I am interested in how this could possibly be an option for our political crises and economic revival as well. It is empirical to say that our current economic problems and its subsequent revival are both dependent upon the political hygiene and good policies formulation to control corruption, budget for large scale agricultural production to protect local products and feed the Country, put up a better security provision for the Citizens and their properties, good infrastructural planning, expert more local products and have low balance of payment.
Wishing all a very happy and peaceful new year 2020!
