CEPO: Form State and Local Governments in the Next 72 Hours

Edmund Yakani, Human Right Defender and the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO)

Tuesday, April 7, 2020 (PW) — The delay of the state and local government formation is causing more harm on the population. Recent numerous challenges are faced the acting state officials who are technical personnel without political responsibilities. Issues of inter-communal violence, abducting of civilians, COVID-19 threats and administration of social services are among the key challenges faced the current acting state government officials.

Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is disturbed the parties delay in forming state and local government structures. This delay demonstrate clearly absence of political trust and confidence for genuine implementation of the R-ARCSS

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said the parties’ should compromise and form the state and local government in the next 72 hours. COVID-19 prevention without full political leadership at state and local government posed threat towards the population. Currently, state preparations for dealing with COVID-19 are in total inadequacy due to absence of political leadership

It time for the parties to demonstrate political maturity for genuine implementation of the R-ARCSS in letter and spirit. Among the political maturity actions are making compromise for paving the best way forward. It is not logical to administer public affairs at state and local government level without political leadership. Mr. Yakani stressed

Finally, CEPO is urging the presidency to at least establish state and local government within the next 72 hours.
