With 4 Ventilators to Spare, South Sudan Announces 34 Confirmed Cases of COVID-19

By Pal Chol Nyan, Juba, South Sudan

Tuesday, April 28, 2020 (PW) — South Sudan has 34 confirmed cases of COVID-19 cases as officially announced by the committee; there are a number of quarantined contacts whose statuses are still uncertain. This is not any longer a tongue-in-cheek. Our resourceful country have only 4 VENTILATORS; pathetic!

The money, which could have been used to elevate the standard of our hospitals, was spent on trivial matters including kickbacks to some people tasked to ensure that somebody somewhere doesn’t go away.

The myth that Africans are immune to then Coronavirus is misguided. The High Level Taskforce committee is doing well. I owe them a debt of thanks but measures related to what the people will eat during this beefed-up lockdown have not been announced. We want to hear this.

Mr President and the FVP, it is high time to appoint the States Governors to go down.

It is not news from the previous experiences that, most, if not all, have failed to deliver services to the citizens but they got away with it.

Their presence at the grassroots would give a fallacious glimpse that there are governments in the States to maintain law and order.

I know the crafty delay to allocate the States is because the IGAD basic math doesn’t serve the interests of some hard line members in the government and the Opposition.

Our people in the countryside don’t know political parties and those who head them. They know only those who build for them schools, health centres, and roads and provide security so that they farm to make their own food.

Last time the same people were negotiating and creating stories to convince us that South Sudan would be stable with so many Vice-Presidents, bloated cabinet and self-serving parliament.

Dear leaders, while you are still negotiating your positions and the distribution of your wealth, please do not take us back to war. The attention of the world is on Coronavirus pandemic.
