July 9th Anniversary: South Sudan is caught up between a rock and a hard place

By Pal Nyan Chol, Juba, South Sudan

Thursday, July 09, 2020 (PW) — Although the expectations of those who stood in the blazing sun to cast their vote for an Independent Country have not been met, allow me to wish you all a Happy Independence Day.

Across their political divides, they successfully demonstrated their inability to govern and unite us. They are failing to agree on appointing Governors for Upper Nile and Jonglei as if these States became islands after the signing of the agreement.

The innocent civilians are the victims and prime targets of elimination by those who should protect them. Our dreams for a better country turned out to be castles in the air.

We are caught up in wars and subjected to an abject poverty. Our people are killing themselves in large numbers. Communities polarized beyond repair and being exploited.

Even those who sang the songs of reforms, ranted and shouted to the top of their voices found themselves properly immersed in the clubs of the lords of corrupt practices to the chagrin of those tormented for having been in bed with them.

The leaders always tell us what they don’t do; empty promises. I am talking about those who survived in the war of struggle thinking that it was their wittinnes that they didn’t die.

Our political kingdom is in tatters. The elites have all they want with the citizens suffering a great deal. God of our ancestors, you have seen with your own eyes; you are an omnipotent God.

The martyrs are stabbed in the back. Watch over us and deliver us from this political dilemma. With you, nothing is impossible.
