Press Release: Padang Community Condemnation to SPLM-IO Killing of Civilians in Maluth and Akoka
Sunday, January 17, 2021 (PW) — It is with deep sadness that the Padang Community is receiving the news of the continuous killing of innocent civilians in Maluth, Akoka and Maban Counties by the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny led SPLM-IO, at the time when the nation is busy implementing the R-ARSS, and at the particular time when the Presidency is tirelessly working to reconcile the communities in Upper Nile State.
Padang Community is totally perplexed and dismayed by Dr. Riek’s SPLM-IO ongoing attacks, killing, displacement and the looting of the properties of the unarmed civilians in Maban, Maluth and Akoka Counties.
These coordinated attacks and systematic killings of civilians, coupled with intentional occupation of Padang land in Pigi and Ruweng territories by SPLM-IO are serious instigations of renewed Inter-communal violence, which need to be stopped immediately if peace is to be realized in Greater Upper Nile.
Padang Community condemns in the strongest possible term the SPLA-IO continuous atrocities and the targeting of Padang People. We sincerely call on the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar to order his army to immediately stop the ongoing atrocities committed against Padang civilians and let them withdraw from Padang territories. We also urge the First Vice President to shunt violence and embrace peace.
In conclusion,
1. We call on the Government to quickly intervene in rescuing the targeted civilians in Northern Upper Nile State; Maluth, Maban, Akoka, Renk and the Padang Community in the Greater Upoer Nile region.
2. We appeal to R-ARSS monitoring bodies including IGAD, R-JMEC, and CTSAMVM to investigateviolation of security by the SPLM-IO forces.
3. We urge the UNMISS to provide protection to the affected civilians in Upper Nile without discrimination.
4. We urgently request the International and regional NGOs to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected civilians in Maban, Maluth and Akoka.
Long live the unity of people of South Sudan
