Finally Resolved? The Pestering Question over Malakal between Shilluk and Padang Dinka

The issue of Makal (Malakal) has been resolved today, Friday, March 12, 2021.

Makal shall be the name of the county headed by a Commissioner while Malakal shall be the municipality headed by a Mayor.

More details in the statement by the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Hon. Dr. Martin Elia Lomoro, after the meeting chaired by the First Vice President, H. E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

Present in the meeting also were the Presidential Adviser on Security Affairs, the Governor of Upper Nile state and his deputy.

MALAKAL RENAME AS THE STATE CAPITAL AND MUNICIPALITY AFTER DISPUTES TO RESOLVED MAKAL COUNTY TO WUGOT WITH HEADQUARTER IN WAU SHILLUK, UPPER NILE STATE

Today’s Friday, March 12th, 2021 (JUBA) Upper Nile state government with National government in the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, R-TGoNU in the Republic of South Sudan agreed to rename Malakal, the upper Nile state capital as the official municipality that consist of Northern, Center and Southern parts of the former Sobat District since independence of the Sudan, in January 01st, 1956.

The meeting to resolved dispute over land boundaries between Padang Dinka and Collo communities in Upper Nile state government has last two weeks left out the official appointment of the reconstituted Makal county commissionership in the state power sharing deal of the Revitalized Peace Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, R-ACRISS signed in 2018.

The state Governor of Upper Nile State, Hon. Budhok Ayang Anei and Hon. James Tor Monybuny, the deputy governor of Upper Nile state in the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, R-TGoNU agreed on the approval to changed Makal county under Malakal state capital with Wugot headquarters in Wau Shilluk in the western part of River Nile bank.

The National Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lumoro says that the high level proposed committees resolved Malakal capital as the municipality of three (3) indicated areas of Northern, Southern and Center of the former Sobat District demarcated in 1956.

This shall be consider as the positive results to dissolved conflict of gravity over land disputes issues in Upper Nile State region over depictured communities, as Upper Nile state capital shall remained as the municipality of the threes areas mentioned by the high level committees to resolved Upper Nile state problem in the formation process of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, R-TGoNU.

In the state government formation, Ulang and Makal county were left out first to resolves administrative areas on the appointment of the county commissioners of the respective places in the state power sharing deal of the Revitalized Peace Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan, R-ACRISS in the Upper Nile state government.

In 2009, the interim in Sudan, approved invitation and petition to create extra county name Malakal which was later adopted in 2010.
